And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 1 Timothy 3:16 KJV

I believe some would debate you on the very existence of life. They just like to be controversial. It’s almost like it is inherently tied to their DNA. They cast doubt on the Truth that’s right before them. The problem is, rejecting Truth leads to eternal consequences.

Paul says, “without controversy”, it means there’s no debate. These are facts. Facts that should be readily acknowledged, accepted, applied, and announced to everyone. But we know there are some that are, “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 2 Timothy 3:7 KJV

These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 1 Timothy 3:14-15 KJV

Paul knew people would be people. He gives instruction on the requirements and responsibilities of leadership in the House of God. His desire was to be with them but he couldn’t so he did what he could. He prayed for them. He prepared them. He desires to protect them from the snares of this world, Satan, and their own flesh. And he does by stating what it will be conveyed through— the local church.

The Lord Jesus saved my eternal soul from Hell. He gave the local church to help prepare us for this life and the life to come. He does this through His instruction Book- the Bible- His written Word. This is how I know when people say they read the Bible but don’t attend church they are rebellious to what God’s Word says.

Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 3:8-13

Church Leadership is important. You don’t want a new born believer making spiritual decisions for the church body. You don’t want those who are struggling with sin to guide the church. You don’t want someone whose household is in disarray to be instructing parents how to train up their children.

What you want in church leadership is someone who is faithful; to the Lord, his wife, his family, and to the local church. Someone who is fruitful; in his home and abroad. Someone who is full of the Holy Spirit because when a man is full of the Spirit there isn’t room for self.

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 1 Timothy 3:2-7 KJV

If we left the qualifications of a pastor up to men, what attributes would you write down? You may have just thought about your pastor and something he needs improvement on. Maybe you err on the side of caution when you look at the office of the pastor. Maybe you err on the side of acceptance when you look at that office.

Friend, God has given us the qualifications. We don’t have to wonder what they should be. We don’t have to work out what the Scriptures mean; explaining why this one or that one should preach or even pastor. The Scriptures are clear, many times we are just confused because our flesh gets in the way. Instead of taking our emotions and preconceived ideas, let’s go to the Scriptures seeking what God says, not only the pastorate, but anything that we need wisdom on. He gives it, we must receive and apply it.

This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 1 Timothy 3:1 KJV

A true saying: the saying before and the saying after. What he just proclaimed about women and what he will say about men is the right doctrinal stance. It’s not just his opinion but God’s Truth.

If any man desires to be in ministry, he desires something that is honorable. Something that isn’t easy but respectful. (Well, it used to be.) It’s a hard work, dealing with people ain’t for the faint of heart. People will say one thing and do another. People will laugh with you while stabbing you in the back. People will use you up and when they are done, move on to someone else. But at the same time, being a bishop, a pastor, someone with oversight in the church, is one of the most fulfilling positions one can serve the Lord in.
