r and ask God to direct us in the world today. Our Mission Statement and Guiding Principles help us live our Capuchin Franciscan life in Western America in the 21st century. What We Do

The friars of the Western America Province seek to serve Christ in a variety of ministries throughout California and Northern Mexico. Our ministries include work in parishes, schools, chaplaincies, retreat houses and the missions. In all these ministries, from San Francisco to Watts to Monterrey, Mexico, our goal is always the same - to be a joyful presence of hope and salvation to all, espcially to those most in need. Wherever we are, we seek to find the power of Christ working in his people. PRAYER
As followers of St. Francis, desiring to be conformed more perfectly to the crucified and risen Christ
◦ We affirm that our prayer is rooted in our Capuchin contemplative tradition and is expressed in many forms.
◦ We seek to witness both personally and communally to affective prayer.
◦ We seek to become a living prayer and joyful presence to draw others to Christ. FRATERNITY
We Capuchins are friars minor, rooted in mutual love, humble reverence and respect for one another and for all people.
◦ Individually and communally, we commit ourselves to be in greater solidarity with the poor.
◦ We manifest a compassionate caring attitude toward one another as brothers.
◦ We affirm, animate, support and encourage the building of community. MINORITY
As brothers of St. Francis, we faithfully follow the meek and humble Christ.
◦ We cultivate a disposition of humility and respect of the dignity of others
◦ We share our joy as lesser brothers by walking with people of every social condition and by being instruments of reconciliation.
◦ We commit ourselves to the evaluation of our lifestyle, both individually and communally.

Padre Pio was a Capuchin friar who spent 50 years inside a small monastery in southern Italy. He was known for bearing the wounds of Christ, for hours-long confessions, and for something harder to explain: appearing at the bedside of the dying, in places he had never physically been.

Padre Pio, pray for us.

Please join us in wishing our vocations director, Fr. Victor Taglianetti, a happy birthday AND ordination anniversary!

Fr. Vic has a gift for inspiring many "yes"s to religious life and brings Christ to all he encounters. We're so lucky that he leads vocations for the Capuchins.

P.S. There's no better birthday gift for Fr. Vic than a vocation inquiry — so if you're discerning, this is your sign!

FEAST OF SAINT FIDELIS OF SIGMARINGEN

If a poor man needed some clothing, Fidelis would often give the man the clothes right off his back. Complete generosity to others characterized this saint’s life.

Born in 1577, Mark Rey became a lawyer who constantly upheld the causes of the poor and oppressed people. Nicknamed “the poor man’s lawyer,” Rey soon grew disgusted with the corruption and injustice he saw among his colleagues. He left his law career to become a priest, joining his brother George as a member of the Capuchin Order. Fidelis was his religious name. His wealth was divided between needy seminarians and the poor.

As a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi, Fidelis continued his devotion to the weak and needy. During a severe epidemic in a city where he was guardian of a friary, Fidelis cared for and cured many sick soldiers.

Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen was appointed head of a group of Capuchins sent to preach against the Calvinists and Zwinglians in Switzerland. Almost certain violence threatened. Those who observed the mission felt that success was more attributable to the prayer of Fidelis during the night than to his sermons and instructions.

He was accused of opposing the peasants’ national aspirations for independence from Austria. While he was preaching at Seewis, to which he had gone against the advice of his friends, a gun was fired at him, but he escaped unharmed. A Protestant offered to shelter Fidelis, but he declined, saying his life was in God’s hands. On the road back, he was set upon by a group of armed men and killed.

Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen was canonized in 1746. Fifteen years later he was recognized as a martyr.
