People loved listening to Jesus teach.

One reason people were drawn to Him, yet often turned away from church, is how Jesus spoke the truth.

He told stories. Stories about camels and needles. Farmers and fields. Fishermen and treasure. His teaching captured people’s attention and imagination.

But Jesus did more than tell great stories. He told the truth.

He spoke honestly about who people were and what they were doing, even when the truth was uncomfortable. Yet He did it in a way that pulled people closer instead of pushing them away.

When the woman at the well avoided the truth about her life, Jesus gently brought it into the conversation. He did not shame her.

When the woman caught in adultery was dragged before Him, He said, “I don’t condemn you.” But He also told her, “Go and leave your life of sin.”

Jesus told the truth without using the truth like a hammer.

And that is why people loved to hear Him teach.

Can I tell ya somethin’?

Today I have both the privilege and burden to officiate not one but two funerals.

And while I’d much prefer to officiate a funeral than a wedding, none of them are easy.

It takes a specific kind of courage and winsomeness to help people navigate their grief, and to say the right words that bring truth and comfort.

And so I just want to remind you today of two things:

First, the global death rate is hovering right around 100%. That means you… and I… are going to die one day.

Second, just because your life on this earth comes to an end, does not mean that it is the end of you.

Eternity is real, and the geographic location options where you can spend your eternity are also real.

God offers the assurance of eternal joy, comfort, and even adventure, through the forgiveness that could only come through the life, death and resurrection Jesus Christ.

… And it’s yours for the taking, if you will just ask him for it.
