This yearโs Appalachia Home Build for the Mitchell family is officially complete! Mrs. Mitchell and her grandchildren will move into their new home at the end of this month.
From May 28-June 7, with travel days on each end, 29 volunteers gave their time, energy, skill, sweat, and hearts to help build Patricia Mitchellโs new home. During the first week, 25 volunteers from NE, MS, WV, and VA supported four crews. Three amazing ladies from Nebraska kept everyone fed and cared for in the kitchen, while 22 volunteers worked across three building crews. The support crew cut lumber and built the front and side entrances and porches; the framing crew framed the entire house, set the trusses, and got the roof on; and the siding crew installed the windows, exterior doors, and siding. Before heading home, most of the first-week volunteers also pitched in to hang drywall and begin the mudding and taping process.
Four more volunteers from Virginia arrived on Tuesday, June 2, joining seven who stayed from the first week to form the finishing crew. Together, they finished the drywall, installed doors, closets, shelves, and window trim, painted, installed the kitchen cabinets, swept everything out, and brought the project across the finish line.
One of the most beautiful moments of the week came that Tuesday, when both crews were together for a house blessing with a local priest. That was followed by dinner and a very emotional exchange as Mrs. Mitchell was given the key to her new home. She also received the many home goods and supplies collected by Nativity Parish at Christmas to help furnish and stock the house. It was a powerful reminder that this home was built not only with lumber, drywall, and nails, but also with prayer, generosity, and love from so many people.
The crews were blessed with good weather, strong teamwork, generous hearts, and the steady grace of God throughout the build. Mrs. Mitchell was a joy to build for โ smiling each day as she watched her new home come together. Those smiles reminded everyone again and again why this work matters.
Thank you to those who prayed, donated, and supported this project every step of the way ๐
