"It's tough, but remember one thing: that if something happens you are in God's hands."

Words of Father Kapaun on the battlefield.
Words that capture his complete trust in God.
Words that reflect how he offered his life for God and his fellow POWs.

In Father Kapaun's eyes, his death wasn't a tragedy, it was a step towards heaven.

As we ask Father Kapaun's intercession today and celebrate his holy life, let's try to imitate his trust.

It's all in God's hands.

Servant of God Father Emil Kapaun, pray for us!

Worthy Sir Knights,

Our 4th Degree Assembly meetings have been temporarily rescheduled to Wednesdays as there is a scheduling conflict with confirmation classes for the next three months. Our next meeting will therefore be Wed 10/3 in the parish hall in Burien at 7pm. We can discuss other options then if needed.

Fraternally,

RETURN HOME OF AN AMERICAN HERO - CHAPLAIN KAPAUN
Korean War Medal of Honor recipient, Army Chaplain (Capt.) Emil Joseph Kapaun, has been accounted for. This weekend, he will return to the United States and to his final resting place in his home state of Kansas.

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the death of Servant of God Father Emil Kapaun.

In thinking about his death lately, two phrases Fr. Kapaun spoke before he died have been standing out to me. “Don’t worry about me,” he told his fellow POWs who were devastated at the loss of their friend and chaplain, “I’m going where I always wanted to go, and when I get there I’ll say a prayer for all of you.” And, in a message of reassurance for his superior back home: “Tell my bishop I died a happy death.”

To me, a slow, lonely, painful death in a Communist prison camp halfway across the world doesn’t seem like a happy death, but then, the saints have a different outlook on life, and that’s why we hold them in high esteem. Father Kapaun’s last words are expressions of his hope. Not hope for a life of ease and comfort, but the hope that comes from trusting God’s promises. The hope that comes from knowing that one has lived one's life striving to follow Christ’s commandment of love.

This year May 23 is also Pentecost Sunday. Holiness is the work of the Holy Spirit, and in every age, the Spirit invites and inspires men and women to offer their lives for Jesus and for others. This Spirit was at work in Fr. Kapaun, enabling him to fulfill the words that Christ spoke to his disciples before his own death: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Of course, Fr. Kapaun didn't start living this way only as death drew near, he offered himself in so many little ways throughout his life: by offering words of encouragement and washing soiled fatigues in the prison cam, by braving enemy fire to pray with and rescue GIs on the battlefield, by his hospitality and dedication to daily duties as a priest – even by his simple prayers and kindness to others as a student and son. That’s what makes a saint, and that’s why he was able to die such a remarkable death.

We remember and honor Fr. Kapaun this weekend and with his return to the diocese this coming fall, we pray that he helps us respond generously to the Holy Spirit’s invitation to offer our lives for Jesus and others, so that we too may live and die in our own remarkable manner.

Servant of God Emil Kapaun, pray for us!

Message from our WA State Secretary Kim Washburn. Please read it and consider a donation using the link at the bottom.

I want to thank each of you that have donated to our GoFundMe program for Special Olympics through the Columbus Charities Tootsie Roll Program. We have had donations of $25 - $500 from donors that want to see this program survive in 2020-2021. We are in jeopardy of loosing our Silver Level sponsorship for Special Olympics because of Covid in not being able to hold drives in most parts of our State. Special Olympics Washington affords Washington State Knights of Columbus the best exposure in our State than any program ever in our Statewide organization.

At this time, we need another $17,000 to continue our Silver Level donation status, which gives kofc a huge amount of publicity and Sponsorship of all Regional, District and State game sponsorships plus the Community State Award sponsorship. I would like to appeal to you again for donations through the GoFundMe link below. Give a donation in memory or support in the name of a family member, friend, etc. or as a Christmas donation representing those that you never know what to give. Possibly a donation for the blessings you have received from all Special Olympians in our State. They are a true blessing from our Lord granted in the gift of life.

The 2020-2021 Tootsie Roll Program will close the year out January 31, 2021, so whatever donations we receive at that time will be it. Please consider a donation/gift for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or as a New Year's resolution.

For those that are on Facebook or other social media, please post this link and story. The story of our program, where donations maybe given, is there. Any donations from $5 to unlimited $$$ are greatly appreciated. Please forward this request to all council GK's and anyone you know.
