The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Today, September 8, we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commemorating this blessed occasion and honoring the holy Mother of God, who prophesied concerning herself: “Behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed, for He that is mighty hath done to me great things” (Luke 1:48–49).
From the earliest centuries, the Church has traditionally commemorated the saints on the day of their departure from this world—the day on which they completed their spiritual struggle and remained steadfast in the faith—so that the faithful might contemplate their lives and imitate their faith, according to the words of the Apostle Paul: “Consider the end of their manner of life, and imitate their faith” (Hebrews 13:7).
Yet the Church has distinguished certain persons whose lives were uniquely connected with God’s plan of salvation and has therefore also celebrated their births. Foremost among them are the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom God chose to be the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh, and Saint John the Baptist, the Forerunner who prepared the way of the Lord, of whom Christ said: “Among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11).
The Nativity of the Virgin Mary
According to the tradition of the Church, the Virgin Mary was born to her holy parents, Joachim and Anna, and her birth came as God’s answer to their prayers after a long period of waiting. Her birth was no ordinary event in the history of salvation, for the child born to them was the one whom God had chosen to become the Mother of God Incarnate.
The Virgin Mary received this unique place because God chose her by His grace, and because she responded to His calling with complete faith and obedience, saying: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). Therefore, the Church honors her and calls her blessed, remembering throughout all generations the great things God accomplished in and through her.
On the feast of her Nativity, we ask the Lord our God, through her intercession, to make us worthy also to hear His word and obey it. Truly hearing the Word of God is not merely listening with our ears; it is fulfilled when we receive it and put it into practice, just as the Virgin Mary did. She heard the Word of God, believed it, obeyed it, and entrusted her entire life to His will.
Let us therefore learn from her to listen attentively to the Word of God, to keep His commandments, and to live according to them, so that we may be worthy to remain with her close to her Son, our Lord and God Jesus Christ.
As we seek her prayers and intercession, we offer her our greeting of peace at the conclusion of our prayers, morning and evening, just as the Archangel Gabriel greeted her with peace at the Annunciation. May the peace of God be with us, and may we also offer our greeting of peace to the Mother of God, asking her to pray for us.
Through her prayers and intercession, may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all, always and forever. Amen.
عيد ميلاد السيدة العذراء مريم
يصادف اليوم، الثامن من أيلول، عيد ميلاد السيدة العذراء مريم، فنحتفل بهذه المناسبة المباركة، ونذكر والدة الإله القديسة التي تنبأت عن نفسها قائلة: «هوذا منذ الآن جميع الأجيال تطوّبني، لأن القدير صنع بي عظائم» (لو 1: 48–49).
وقد اعتادت الكنيسة منذ القرون الأولى أن تحتفل بتذكارات القديسين في يوم انتقالهم من هذا العالم، أي في اليوم الذي أكملوا فيه جهادهم الروحي وحفظوا الإيمان، لكي يتأمل المؤمنون في سيرتهم ويتمثلوا بإيمانهم، بحسب قول الرسول بولس: «انظروا إلى نهاية سيرتهم فتمثلوا بإيمانهم» (عب 13: 7).
غير أن الكنيسة ميّزت بعض الشخصيات التي ارتبطت حياتها ارتباطًا فريدًا بتدبير الله للخلاص، فاحتفلت أيضًا بميلادها، وفي مقدمتهم القديسة مريم العذراء، التي اختارها الله لتكون أمًا لربنا يسوع المسيح بحسب الجسد، والقديس يوحنا المعمدان، السابق الذي هيأ الطريق أمام الرب، والذي قال عنه المسيح: «لم يقم بين المولودين من النساء أعظم من يوحنا المعمدان» (مت 11: 11).
ميلاد العذراء
وُلدت العذراء مريم من والديها القديسين يواكيم وحنّة، بحسب التقليد الكنسي، وكان ميلادها ثمرة استجابة الله لصلواتهما بعد انتظار طويل. ولم يكن ميلادها حدثًا عاديًا في تاريخ الخلاص، لأن الطفلة التي وُلدت منهما هي التي اختارها الله لتصبح فيما بعد والدة الإله المتجسد.
وقد بلغت العذراء مكانتها الفريدة لأن الله اختارها بنعمته، ولأنها أجابت دعوته بإيمان وطاعة كاملة، قائلة: «هوذا أنا أمة الرب. ليكن لي كقولك» (لو 1: 38). ولذلك تكرمها الكنيسة وتطوّبها، وتذكر عبر الأجيال ما صنعه الله بها من عظائم.
وفي عيد ميلادها، نسأل الرب الإله بشفاعتها أن يؤهّلنا نحن أيضًا لكي نسمع كلمته ونطيعها. فالسمع الحقيقي لكلمة الله لا يقتصر على سماعها بالأذن، بل يكتمل بقبولها والعمل بها، كما فعلت العذراء مريم، التي سمعت كلمة الله وآمنت بها وأطاعتها، وسلّمت حياتها كلها لمشيئته.
فلنتعلّم منها أن نصغي إلى كلمة الله، وأن نحفظ وصاياه ونعمل بها، لكي نستحق أن نكون معها قريبين من ابنها، ربنا وإلهنا يسوع المسيح.
ونحن الذين نطلب صلواتها وشفاعتها، نرفع إليها السلام في ختام صلواتنا صباحًا ومساءً، كما ألقى عليها الملاك جبرائيل السلام يوم البشارة. فليكن سلام الله معنا، ولنقدّم نحن أيضًا سلامنا لوالدة الإله، طالبين منها أن تصلّي من أجلنا.
وبصلواتها وشفاعتها، لتكن نعمة ربنا يسوع المسيح وسلامه معكم جميعًا، دائمًا وأبدًا. آمين.
