By decision of the Representative Assembly of the Armenian Diocese of California, the National Constitution of the Armenians of America was put into use in 1930. Catholicos Gevorg V had sent it to the Eastern Diocese of the United States in 1929. Then, in 1932, a new Constitution of the California Diocese was adopted, which Primate Bishop Karekin Khachaturian sent to Holy Etchmiadzin for confirmation. In 1946, the Diocesan Constitution was adopted in a new edition.

What we today understand as parishes were called “dioceses” (thems) in that document and in the press of the time. Article 37, for example, states: “Every colony that has an ecclesiastical structure is called a diocese. The qualified members of each church, without distinction of s*x, constitute the diocesan community.”

One of our favorite verses, and one with such a beautiful meaning. 🍂

Happy Wednesday, dear Faithful! Today’s Verse of the Day comes from Jeremiah 29:11:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Sometimes God’s plan does not unfold in the way or timing we expect, but that does not mean He is absent. Faith reminds us to trust even when we cannot yet see what lies ahead. What feels uncertain today may simply be a chapter God is still writing.

May we move through this Wednesday with patience in our hearts, hope for what is ahead, and trust that God’s purpose is greater than what we can see in this moment. 🙏🏼✨

🍁 Hello, October!

There once was a season that arrived without knocking.
It painted the trees gold, scattered leaves along our path, and whispered, “Something is changing.”

Here’s a little riddle…
What falls, but never loses its purpose?
A leaf. 🍂
Because sometimes letting go is simply how God makes room for what comes next.

October reminds us that just as the seasons change, we do too. We grow, we learn, we give, and we discover new reasons to be grateful. Yet through every changing season, God’s love remains constant.

For generations, the St. Leon Ladies Society has carried that spirit forward through faith, service, friendship, and the quiet acts of love that strengthen our Church and community. As another autumn unfolds around our beloved St. Leon Ghevontiants Armenian Cathedral, we give thanks for those who came before us, those who serve beside us today, and all that God continues to place before us.

And under the spiritual guidance of our Parish Priest, Fr. Khajag Shahbazyan, we enter this new month with grateful hearts, ready for all the little blessings October may bring.

So bring on the cooler mornings, changing leaves, pumpkins, coffee, and maybe an extra piece of something sweet with it. ☕️🎃🍂

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1

May October bring gratitude to our hearts, joy to our days, and renewed faith for whatever the next season may hold.

With prayers for a beautiful and blessed October,
Fr. Khajag Shahbazyan, Parish Priest
& the St. Leon Ladies Society

Strength or Performance?
by Vahe Sargsyan

What if some of the things we call strength are really just performance?

In the last article, we looked at the Cross as a sign of victory. But the Cross also shows us what real strength looks like. To the world, Christ looked defeated. He was mocked, beaten, and crucified. Yet through that apparent weakness, He conquered death. The Cross does not glorify weakness. It reveals a different kind of strength.

We often confuse strength with loudness, aggression, pride, or the ability to dominate. Anger can look like courage. Arrogance can look like confidence. Refusing to apologize can look like toughness. But Scripture gives us a much harder standard: “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city” (Proverbs 16:32). Real strength begins with self-control.

Christ showed this perfectly. When He was arrested, He told His disciples that He could call upon His Father and receive “more than twelve legions of angels” (Matthew 26:53). He had power, but He did not need to prove it. That is the difference between strength and performance. Performance needs an audience. Real strength does not.

Christ also changed the way we should think about greatness. He said, “Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant” (Mark 10:43). Christian strength is not about standing above others. It is about carrying responsibility for others. It means protecting without controlling, leading without humiliating, speaking truth without cruelty, and serving without needing recognition.

St. John Chrysostom says, “For often to be defeated is better, and this is the best mode of victory.” A modern example comes from Jocko Willink, retired Navy SEAL officer and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. Speaking about street confrontations, he says, “If someone just wants to punch me, well, I’ll walk away from them or run away from them.” His point is simple: not every confrontation deserves a response. Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is de-escalate, walk away, and save your strength for what actually matters.

This does not mean weakness or avoiding confrontation. There are times to speak firmly, defend what is right, protect others, and refuse compromise. But there is a difference between acting from courage and reacting from ego. If anger controls me, am I really strong? If pride makes it impossible to apologize, who is actually in control? If every insult demands a response, am I ruling myself, or am I being ruled by someone else’s words?

St. Paul gives us the balance clearly: “Be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love” (1 Corinthians 16:13–14). Strength and love are not opposites. Strength without love becomes aggression. Confidence without humility becomes arrogance. Authority without service becomes domination.

The Cross shows us that real strength is often quiet. It looks like restraint, responsibility, sacrifice, discipline, courage, and self-control. It means keeping your word when it becomes inconvenient, admitting when you are wrong, and choosing what is right even when no one is watching.

So perhaps the question is not, “Do I look strong?”

It is: “Am I strong enough to govern myself?”
