A Mission Met with
Courage

The Point
God gives us courage to speak boldly about Christ.

The Passage
Acts 4:1-3, 8-12,19-20

In Acts 4, Peter and John did a good deed that drew attention to Jesus Christ, and that got them in hot water with the religious leaders who opposed them. Their experience shows us how God gives us courage to stand strong in the face of adversity.

Acts 4:1-3
Peter and John Arrested

4 Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.

Acts 4:8-12

8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: 9 If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Acts 19-20
19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. 20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”

God had used Peter and John to miraculously heal a man lame from birth who was known by many because he was regularly brought to the temple gate to beg.

The priests, temple police, and Sadduces were in an uproar because they strongly objected that Jesus was the Messiah and the source of life.

Sharing the good news of the gospel includes confronting people with their wrongdoing and wrong beliefs. That takes courage.

Obedience to God means we continue to proclaim Christ regardless of the cost. The cost of disobedience is too great!

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the example of Peter and John standing firm under pressure. Lord, help us to always choose to listen to you rather than to the opinions of others. Give us the courage to speak boldly about Jesus and to proclaim the truth of your Gospel, regardless of adverse circumstances. We cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard of your goodness. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Isaiah 58:11

11 The Lord will guide you continually,
And satisfy your soul in drought,
And strengthen your bones;
You shall be like a watered garden,
And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

God will provide constant guidance, inner strength, and sustained renewal to those who follow Him, even during difficult "drought" or barren seasons. It paints a picture of being like a "well-watered garden" or a "spring whose waters never fail," symbolizing emotional, physical, and spiritual vitality, flourishing, and resilience.

Yahweh will always guide you where to go and what to do. He will fill you with refreshment even when you are in a dry, difficult place. He will continually restore strength to you, so you will flourish like a well-watered garden and like an ever-flowing, trustworthy spring of blessing.

Key Meaning and Themes

● Constant Guidance & Provision: The Lord promises to lead His people continually and provide for their needs in arid, "sun-scorched" conditions.

● Inner Strength (Strengthened Bones): It means receiving divine renewal, restoring vitality, and gaining strength during weariness.

● Flourishing Life: Being a "watered garden" signifies a fruitful, vibrant life that thrives despite challenges.

● Unfailing Supply: A "spring of water" symbolizes a constant flow of grace, salvation, and blessings that do not cease.

● Result of True Worship: This promise is given to those who live justly, help the poor, and care for others, rather than engaging in selfish or empty religious rituals.

This passage often brings comfort to those struggling with exhaustion, anxiety, or times of scarcity, encouraging them to trust that God is with them and will guide them.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your promise to guide me always and satisfy my soul, even in the sun-scorched, dry times of my life. Lord, I lean on Your promise to strengthen my frame and make me like a watered garden that never fails. I surrender my need for control and ask for Your direction, wisdom, and strength to flow through me today. Let Your presence renew me, and let my life be a reflection of Your love and care. I pray this in Jesus precious name, Amen.

2 Peter 2:1-3
Destructive Doctrines

1But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction [a]does not slumber.

Apostle Peter warns that false teachers will secretly introduce destructive heresies within the church, denying Christ, promoting immorality, and exploiting believers for greed. Peter assures that these teachers are destined for swift destruction and judgment, as their actions blaspheme the truth and lead many astray.

Key Breakdown of 2 Peter 2:1-3:

● The Presence of False Teachers (v. 1): Just as Israel had false prophets, the church will face false teachers who rise from within to distort truth.

● The Nature of the Danger (v. 1): Their heresies are "destructive" and "secretly introduced," meaning they are subtle and not always obvious.

● Denying the Master (v. 1): They deny Christ, likely through their immoral actions or by twisting doctrine, despite appearing as believers.

● Destructive Influence (v. 2): Many will follow their "sensuality" (licentious, immoral lifestyles), which causes the "way of truth" to be discredited.

● Motivation and Methods (v. 3): Motivated by greed, they use "feigned" (molded/false) words to exploit believers, often offering a "comfortable" gospel.

● Certain Judgment (v. 3): Despite their popularity, their judgment is active ("not idle") and their destruction is imminent.

Key Takeaways for Believers:

● Be Vigilant: False teachers often appear from inside the church, not just from the outside.

● Spot the Motive: Watch for leaders motivated by greed or sexual immorality (sensuality).

● Check the Message: False teaching is rarely labeled as such; it is disguised with subtle, deceptive words.

Peter’s point is that just as in the past, opposition to God's truth exists, and believers must be on guard until Christ returns.

*Beware of Wolves in*
Sheep's clothing

Prayer:
I come before You, thanking You for the gift of Your Word, which is truth. Lord, I am mindful of the warnings in 2 Peter 2:1-3 regarding false teachers who seek to bring in destructive heresies and deny the Lord who bought them.

Lord, I ask for the gift of discernment. Open my eyes to recognize deceptive teachings and teachers who seek to exploit the flock through greed, immorality, or distorted messages. Help me to stay rooted in the true gospel, not misled by anything that sounds enticing yet leads away from You.

Guard my heart and mind from corruption and help me to love Your truth above all else. Protect Your church, Lord, from the destruction caused by false doctrine and keep us safe under the shadow of Your wings.

I trust in Your righteous judgment, knowing that You see all things. Give me the strength to stand firm, to live in holiness, and to honor You with my life.
In Jesus precious name I pray, Amen.

Psalm 51:10
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10 is a well-known biblical prayer of repentance, stating: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me" Written by King David, this plea requests inner transformation, forgiveness, and spiritual renewal, acknowledging that only God can purify the heart.

Key Themes and Context

● Context of Repentance: David wrote this psalm after being confronted about his adultery with Bathsheba, indicating a profound need to move from guilt to restoration.

● Divine Creation: The word "create" (Hebrew: bara) implies a divine, miraculous act of creating something new, rather than just repairing an old heart that has been corrupted by sin.

● Need for a "Clean Heart": This phrase represents a plea for a pure, holy inner life that is not distracted by worldly desires.

● "Right Spirit" Renewal: This refers to a steadfast, loyal, and aligned spirit that desires to follow God's will and honor Him.

● Daily Application: Many interpret this verse not just as a one-time salvation prayer, but a daily request for ongoing spiritual renewal in a flawed world.

This psalm is a profound example of repentance, shifting focus from "what I have done" to "what I am" before God.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I come before You in the name of Jesus, acknowledging my need for Your grace. Lord, I cannot purify my own heart; only You can wash away my sin and guilt.

Remove from me a heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh—pure, soft, and devoted to You.
Shift my spirit away from temptation and toward

Your righteousness. Replace my doubt with faith and my selfishness with a willing spirit to serve You.

Wash me clean of my transgressions and let me feel the joy of Your presence again.

Thank You, Father, for Your unfailing love and for Your promise of transformation. In Jesus’ precious name I pray, Amen.

Fruitful Growth in the Faith

2 Peter 1:5-11

5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control [a]perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither [b]barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.

10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Peter commands believers to actively develop Christian character, building upon the foundation of faith to ensure spiritual fruitfulness and assurance. Peter outlines a progression of virtues—virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, kindness, and love—that prevent spiritual blindness and guarantee a "rich entrance" into God’s eternal kingdom.

It promises that believers who actively grow in Christian virtues (listed in vv. 5-7) will receive a "richly provided" or "abundant" entrance into the eternal kingdom of Jesus Christ. It highlights that while salvation is by grace, faithful, diligent living results in a triumphant, honored welcome into heaven, rather than a mere admission.

It is frequently used in sermons to motivate believers to pursue holiness and sanctification, focusing on future rewards rather than just escape from punishment.

Key Interpretations and Meanings:

● Abundant Welcome: The verse suggests a "triumphant welcome," similar to a victorious Roman general returning home, for those who cultivated Christ-like character.

● Assurance of Faith: It serves as a concluding promise that diligent spiritual growth confirms one's calling and election, leading to confidence in salvation rather than fear.

● Focus on Growth: The "entrance" is connected to not falling and growing in grace, moving beyond bare salvation to a fruitful, productive spiritual life.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the precious faith and the divine power that has given me everything I need for life and godliness. Because of Your great promises, I ask for the strength to give all diligence to add to my faith virtue.

Lord, I pray that these qualities be not only present in my life but that they grow in abundance. Keep me from being blind or barren, ensuring I am effective and fruitful in my knowledge of Jesus Christ.

I ask for the diligence to make my calling and election sure. Help me to walk in such a way that I never stumble, that You might provide me an abundant entrance into Your eternal kingdom.
In Jesus precious name I pray, Amen.

1 Peter 5:5-11

Submit to God, Resist the Devil

5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for

“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”

6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

8 Be [a]sober, be [b]vigilant; [c]because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 10 But [d]may the God of all grace, who called [e]us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, [f]perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11 To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Peter is teaching that believers should "clothe themselves" with humility toward one another, as God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. It encourages submitting to God's authority, casting all anxieties upon Him due to His care, and remaining vigilant against the devil, while promising that God will restore and strengthen those who suffer briefly.

Key Themes and Meaning

● Humility in Relationships: Younger members are to submit to elders, and everyone should be humble toward each other, avoiding pride which pushes God away.

● Casting Anxieties: Believers are urged to transfer their burdens, worries, and anxiety onto God, trusting in His active care, rather than carrying the weight themselves.

● Spiritual Vigilance: Followers are called to be sober-minded and alert, resisting the devil (the adversary), who seeks to devour.

● Endurance and Restoration: Suffering is described as temporary ("a little while"). God promises to personally restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish believers through His grace.

Usage Examples in Life

● Managing Anxiety: Daily, or even hourly, intentionally transferring anxieties (health, finances, relationships) to God in prayer.

● Conflict Resolution: Choosing humility over self-justification when disagreeing with leaders or in difficult situations.

● Standing Firm: Resisting temptation and fear by staying rooted in faith, knowing other Christians face similar trials.

This passage provides assurance that despite suffering, God cares for His people and will eventually exalt them in due time.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I come before You in the name of Jesus, seeking to clothe myself with humility, knowing that You oppose the proud but give grace to the humble.

Lord, help me to humble myself under Your mighty hand, releasing my desire for control and trusting in Your perfect timing to lift me up. I surrender my pride and ask for a spirit of submission and service.

Father, I confess that I have carried my own cares, trying to be my own master. Today, I actively cast all my anxieties, fears, and burdens upon You, for I know that You truly care for me.

Give me a sober and alert mind to recognize the enemy's schemes. Grant me the strength to resist the devil, standing firm in my faith against all trials.

Thank You, God of all grace, for calling me to Your eternal glory. After I have suffered for a little while, I trust You to restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish me. To You be the power forever and ever. In Jesus precious name I pray, Amen.

A Mission with a Message

The Point
We can have a relationship with God through Christ alone.

The Passage
Acts 3:12-20, 24-26

Our world abounds with religions and spokespersons telling us their version of how to know God and how to get where everyone wants to go-Heaven. But there is only one way to Heaven. The death and resurrection of Christ alone opened the way for us to come to God. Having come to see the truth about Christ and the gospel, Peter and John wanted others to know the truth of salvation through Christ alone.

Acts 3:12-15
12 So when Peter saw it, he responded to the people: “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let Him go. 14 But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and killed the [a]Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.

Acts 3:16-20
16 And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

17 “Yet now, brethren, I know that you did it in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, 20 and that He may send [a]Jesus Christ, who was [b]preached to you before,

Acts 3:24-26
24 Yes, and all the prophets, from Samuel and those who follow, as many as have spoken, have also [a]foretold these days. 25 You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ 26 To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.”

Every person must respond in repentance and faith in Jesus in order to be forgiven, have our relationship with God restored, and enjoy the ultimate blessings of eternal life.

After responding to Jesus and enjoying the blessing of salvation, just as God said to Abraham, God desires to bless others through us by using us to share the good news about Jesus with those who don't personally know Him. God's desire to bless others through us extends not just to our friends and family but to "all the kindred of the earth". That means every disciple of Jesus has a part to play in the Great Commission. By praying for the gospel to advance among unreached peoples, giving generously to support missionaries and mission work, or by answering the call to go to the nations, we can all be apart of God's plan to bless "all the kindreds of the earth" by ensuring the gospel is proclaimed in every nation and among all tribes, peoples, and languages.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
I come before You in the name of Jesus, the author of life, whom You raised from the dead. Thank You that Your gifts and calling are without repentance, and that You remain faithful even when I am faithless.

Lord, I look to Acts 3:12 and pray for a humble heart. Let me not look to my own power or godliness, but only to the strength found in the name of Jesus. I thank You that faith in His name brings healing, wholeness, and salvation.

I repent and turn back to You, Lord. I ask that You forgive my sins and wipe them away, so that times of refreshing may come from Your presence. In an age of busyness and weariness, I ask for the comfort, renewal, and "rest" that can only come from being in Your presence, as described in Acts 3:19.

I yield my life to You, turning away from my own plans to Your perfect providence. Thank You for sending Jesus to bless me by turning me from my wickedness.

In Jesus’ holy name, I pray.
Amen.

1 Peter 4:12-19

Suffering for God’s Glory

12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 14 If you are [a]reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. [b]On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a [c]busybody in other people’s matters. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this [d]matter.

17 For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 Now

“If the righteous one is scarcely saved,
Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?”

19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.

Peter encourages Christians not to be surprised by "fiery trials" (intense suffering or persecution) for their faith, but rather to view them as a way to share in Christ's sufferings. Peter instructs believers to rejoice, trust God as a faithful creator, and continue doing good, ensuring they suffer for righteousness, not wrongdoing.

Suffering for Christ brings blessing, as it allows sharing in his suffering, leads to future joy, and secures the resting of God’s Spirit. Believers should entrust their souls to God and continue doing good.

Key Themes in a 1 Peter 4:12-19 Sermon:

● Don't Be Surprised (v. 12): Trials are not accidents or strange occurrences, but testing that refines faith like gold.

● Rejoice in Sharing (v. 13-14): Believers can rejoice because suffering aligns them with Christ, allowing them to share in his glory. Those insulted for Christ are blessed, for the Spirit of God rests on them.

● Righteous vs. Self-Inflicted Suffering (v. 15-16): The text distinguishes between suffering for righteousness (which brings honor to God) and suffering for sinful behavior.

● Trust the Creator (v. 19): Believers should continue to do good while entrusting their lives to God, who is a "faithful Creator," ensuring their suffering is purposeful.

(Billy Graham)

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
I come to You in the midst of the fiery trials and unexpected challenges that I face. Your Word instructs me not to be surprised by these hardships as though something strange were happening, but to understand them as a testing of my faith.

Lord, I ask for the grace to rejoice in these moments, knowing that I am sharing in the sufferings of Christ. May I not be ashamed, but rather count it a blessing to bear Your name, trusting that the Spirit of glory rests upon me.

Keep me, Lord, from suffering because of my own wrongdoing, gossip, or foolishness. Instead, help me to live in such a way that if I suffer, it is for doing good and following You.

In the midst of difficult times, I choose to entrust my soul to You, my faithful Creator, and I commit to continuing to do good. Thank You for the refining process that draws me closer to You.

In Jesus’ precious name I pray, Amen.
