The foundation of our civil republican form of government was the Mayflower Compact. It was agreed and signed by all members before they ever left the ship. In the Rotunda of the United States Capitol, there hangs a painting of the deck of the ship called the Embarkation of the Pilgrims of Delft Haven, Holland, July 22, 1620. When I took school groups to Washington, D.C., we always took the tour, and I pointed out to the students the most important prayer meeting ever made for America. These pilgrims were leaving the port, and their Pastor, John Robinson, was praying with them. He had preached messages from God’s Word to instruct them in forming their new government principles based upon the Word of God. He actually taught them to elect officials from among themselves and to choose wisely based on their character, ability, and, most of all, their respect for God and the Bible.
Before they ever left the ship, they formed and signed the Mayflower Compact, the forerunner of our American Constitution. They agreed from the start on their republican form of Government to secure their liberty and their unity. That served them well, for they endured great hardships that would cause others to fail.
Pastor Robinson Preached: “Lastly, whereas you are become a body politic, using amongst yourselves civil government, and are not furnished with any persons of special eminency above the rest, to be chosen by you into office of government; let your wisdom and godliness appear, not only in choosing such persons as do entirely love and will promote the common good, but also in yielding unto them all due honor and obedience in their lawful administrations…”
(Robinson, John. Robert Ashton, ed., The Works of John Robinson, Pastor of the Pilgrim Fathers (London: John Snow, 1851), Vol. 2, pp. 140-141.)
As we go to the Polls to vote today and for every election this year, we must all do several things. First, do what the Pilgrims did and pray. Seek God’s wisdom from His Word about your choices. Second, get informed. Never just take the word of media outlets or even other people without doing personal research, especially about the candidates. Take a sample ballot and mark your choices. The most important step is to get IN your car, head ot the polls, and Vote! The greatest voice you have in our great land to protect your liberties is to cast that ballot.
When Good Americans go to the Polls and actually cast a Ballot with their choice, they are more powerful than all the politicians put together. Don’t be one of the 70% of Americans who do not care because they do not vote! Let’s break that midterm defeatist view and turn out the Powerful Voice of Americans. Go Vote!
