Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Celestine V, a humble hermit who unexpectedly became Pope during a difficult time in the Church. Despite holding the highest position in the Catholic Church, he remained simple, prayerful, and detached from worldly honor. Realizing that his strength was in solitude and prayer rather than leadership, he courageously resigned from the papacy - becoming one of the few popes in history to do so.

Prayers for the victims of today’s horrific violence at the San Diego Islamic Center. Our deepest condolences to the victims’ families, the entire Muslim community in San Diego and all those affected by this senseless shooting.

Dear God, we pray for healing, justice and an end to hate. 🙏

A special message from our Bishop Michael Pham to the Muslim Community of San Diego.

“We stand united in solidarity and prayer with the Muslim community who was subjected to a senseless act of violence at the Islamic Center of San Diego which claimed the lives of five people including the suspects.

The Islamic Center has been a longtime partner in our collaborative work for justice, especially in accompanying immigrants. Houses of worship must always be sanctuaries of peace, safety, and prayer. An attack on one faith community is an attack on the sacred dignity of all human life.

On behalf of the entire Roman Catholic community of San Diego, we offer my deepest condolences, solidarity, and fervent prayers to the families of the victims and the entire Muslim community.”
