Gardeners are encouraged to offer excess produce to the church for distribution to the Buffalo Food Shelf. 2013 Buffalo Presbyterian Garden Report
As spring 2014 comes about we at the BPC will start to think gardening. This will be our fifth season the BPC has provided a community garden. Each year we learn a little more and try to improve from last years mistakes. For those of you that are
not familiar with this mission project to summarize, we provide garden plots for gardeners in our community. Our garden is on our church property just west of our building. We collect rain water from the roof for watering. We also have a portion of land that church members grow produce for the Buffalo food shelf, Buffalo senior center, church members and families in need . The spring season started off with a lot of rain causing seeds to be replanted and the garden tilled on several occasions. A strong mid July wind also caused damage to tomatoes and sweet corn. Squash and pie pumpkins were late but matured well. For the 2013 season we had fifty plots used by 26 gardeners, our church provided 400 lbs of food to the Buffalo food shelf, salsa, beet pickles, squash and pie pumpkins were also sold at the BPC Fall Craft and Bake sale. There were several excellent experienced gardeners’ growing this year. In light of the fact we had more requests for garden plots in 2013 than were available the garden committee will need to make decisions regarding methods to improve maintained and upkeep of all garden plots. We are continuing to make improvements each year for ease of care of the garden. This year we added a drain line at the south west of the plot to control rain water runoff. The compost bin was completed late fall. More wood chip paths to and from water and the compost bin
are being added. By making these changes we are able to maintain better w**d control and accessibility. The paths were maintained well this season. A new water line was also added on the north path. We also had contributions made to purchase six apple trees that were planted on the north side of the plot in July. We would like to thank all our gardeners members and volunteers who have planted, tilled, cut grass, cut and cleared the old plant refuse, watered etc. Your help has been greatly appreciated.
