Phoenix United Church of Christ Progressive church journeying with the Still Speaking God. Open to squirming, noisy "kids" of all ages regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, ability

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PUCC

WHAT ARE YOUR BELIEFS? Progressive, Inclusive, Spiritual, Accepting of All regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, ability. We take the Bible seriously but not literally. We believe that a person should not parrot what others have taught but think and learn for themselves. We believe that laughing, being joyful and celebrating, are as important as prayin

g, listening, and being silent. DO YOU CHARGE ADMISSION? No, and it is your choice whether or not to put an offering in the plate

CAN I COME IN JEANS? Jeans, sweats, shorts, wear whatever makes you comfortable. WILL MY CHILDREN BE ACCEPTED AND CARED FOR? We love squirming, noisy, inquisitive children, before, during and after the service Worship is inter-generational, though there is space in the sanctuary where kids can go to read, color, and do puzzles. DOES THE DOG BITE? Stein, a black lab mix, loves children and adults. He is an AKC Good Citizen, which means he does nursing home and hospital visits. He is watched very carefully but he is still an animal who will protect himself if frightened or provoked. WHY SHOULD I COME TO PHOENIX UCC? At a time when religion is too often portrayed as narrow-minded and exclusive, we provide an alternative voice and vision where God is all-loving and inclusive. We offer a safe place where your mind is nourished as much as your soul. A place where people say what they mean and sometimes disagree, but never say your point of view is wrong because it is different from their’s. WHEN ARE SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES? Sundays at 10:00 AM

This we believe

In an exceptional show of solidarity, theologians and spiritual leaders of the United Church of Christ's seven seminaries and their colleagues are uniting as signatories on this call to action, denouncing "the profound moral evil of white supremacy" and urging all Christians to make concrete change…

For your journey this week, here is a poem by Ann Weems “Holy Week.”

Holy is the week…

Holy, consecrated, belonging to God…

We move from hosannas to horror

with predictable ease

of those who know not what they do.

Our hosannas sung,

our palms waved,

let us go with passion into this week.

It is time to curse fig trees that do not yield fruit.

It is time to cleanse our temples of any blasphemy.

It is time to greet Jesus as the Lord’s Anointed One,

to lavishly break our alabaster

and pour perfume out for him

without counting the cost.

It is a time for preparation…

The time to give thanks and break bread is upon us.

The time to give thanks and drink of the cup is imminent.

Eat, drink, remember:

On this night of nights, each one must ask,

as we dip our bread in the wine,

“Is it I?”

And on that darkest of days, each of us must stand

beneath the tree

and watch the dying

if we are to be there

when the stone is rolled away.

The only road to Easter morning

is through the unrelenting shadows of that Friday.

Only then will the alleluias be sung;

only then will the dancing begin.

My heart is breaking.

My heart is breaking.

A prayer from Maren Tirabassi...

Music of sadness, improv on Psalm 150

Pray for Syria.
Pray for Syria in churches and synagogues and mosques;
pray for Syria under a sky of warplanes!
Pray for Syria in the wake of chemical warfare;
pray for Syria with the music of our sadness!
Pray for Syria with Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons;
pray for Syria with the UN Security Council!
Pray for Syria with discussions in Brussels.
Pray for Syria with the hopes of children!
Pray for Syria with open doors for refugees;
pray for Syria with clanging open doors for refugees!
Let everything that breathes pray for Syria!
Pray for the breathing of Syria!
Those who cannot breathe,
cannot praise God.

Come, Immanuel

Come, Immanuel, God with us to be.
Come down from paradise and occupy
this dirty stable of humanity.
Come and live rough, as we do: come and die.

Come and be lonely as an orphaned child.
Come to where grief is harvested and stored.
Come to where empty agèd minds run wild.
Come to the hospice and the cancer ward.

Come, flee from tyrants as a refugee.
Come, be betrayed by those you counted friends.
Come and be tortured with no amnesty.
Come as the means to justify all ends.

Come and be broken like a Christmas toy.
Come, be completely human—then we’ll know
your sorrow may bring hope of lasting joy
and God above is God with us below.

Written for the carol service at St John’s, West Ealing in 2003. Immanuel is Hebrew for God with us.
