Are Anointing of the Sick and Last Rites the same thing?
No.
Anointing of the Sick is ONE PART of Last Rites.
Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament not always administered within the context of Last Rite. It is administered for anyone seriously ill, going into surgery or elderly. It is to give hope for healing and sometimes actual healing and understanding the submission to the Will of God.
Last Rites is the whole Sacrament reserved for people close to death and is normally only given 1x. It is 3 Sacraments and includes, Confession, Annointing of the Sick with oils, Holy Communion(Viaticum), prayers for dying and Apostolic Pardon.
The entire Sacrament, therefore, is all about preparing the soul to meet Christ, its Savior and Judge, which is why everyday we ought to pray for a holy death.
The effects of the sacrament of Extreme Unction/Annointing of the Sick are: first, an increase of sanctifying grace; second, comfort in sickness and strength against temptation; third, preparation for entrance into heaven by the remission of our venial sins and the cleansing of our souls from the remains of sin; fourth, health of body when it is good for the soul.
Does it remitt mortal sin if you are unconscious? Yes, but only if you had imperfect contrition before you became unconscious.
A priest is the only minister for Annointing of the Sick/Last Rites/Extreme Unction. The oils used are blessed during the Chrism Mass during Holy Week.
Sacraments are only for Catholics, but a person can convert on deathbed and would receive all Sacraments (except matrimony/holy orders, normally.)
Do not wait until the person is minutes from death or slipped into a coma to call for Last Rites. Do not be afraid to call a priest or think the person will be scared if one arrives.
Eternity is on the line.
Give the person a chance to square their life away with a priest BEFORE they die. God is merciful and just but we must do our part to receive His mercy.
An Apostolic Pardon is a plenary indulgence that is why Confession and Communion are necessary parts of Last Rites.
Many well meaning priests and people only administer and receive Anointing of the Sick and not the complete Last Rites. The wording of the Sacrament often confuses people as to what was done. Or they skip and only give Apostolic Pardon. This is dangerous and you are playing with fire.
I will link articles and resources for you to fully understand the importance of the Sacrament and for you to prepare for your soul or the soul of a loved one.
