Calvary Chapel of Buena Park

Calvary Chapel of Buena Park We are a non-denominational church that serves our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Join us Sunday mor Our Statement of Faith!

We believe that there is one living and true GOD, eternally existing in three distinct persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in nature, power and glory; that this triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all. We believe that the Scriptures consisting of the Old and New Testament are the word of God, full inspired without error in the original manuscripts, and are the inf

allible rule of faith and practice. We believe in GOD THE FATHER, an infinite, personal Spirit perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love. That He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ. We believe in JESUS CHRIST, God's only begotten Son, fully God and fully human, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in his virgin birth, sinless life, miracle and teachings. His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, and perpetual intercession for His people. We believe in the HOLY SPIRIT, who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, seal and empower for ministry all who believe in Christ. We believe the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, Comforter and Guide. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all Biblical gifts of the Spirit. We believe that all people are sinners by nature and choice and therefore, are under condemnation; that God imparts life by the Holy Spirit, to those who repent of their sins and confess Jesus Christ as Lord; and believe that God raised Him from the dead on the third day after His crucifixion. Salvation is by grace through faith alone, not by works. We believe in the universal church, the living spiritual body, of which Christ is the Head and all regenerated persons are members. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ committed two ordinances to the church:

Baptism
The Lord's Supper

We believe in the baptism by immersion and communion open to all believers. We believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are still in operation today and should be exercised within the guidelines found in the Scriptures, decently and in order. For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace. And that they are distributed by the sovereign will of the Holy Spirit to whom He chooses. We believe in the personal, visible, bodily return of Christ to earth and the establishment of His Kingdom in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and eternal blessing of the righteous and endless suffering of the wicked in the Lake of Fire. We believe in what is termed "THE APOSTLES CREED" as embodying fundamentals facts of the Christian faith.

Matthew 22:23-33
The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?

23 The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 24 saying: “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. 27 Last of all the woman died also. 28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.

In many places within the gospels, the religious leaders try to trick and trap Jesus with difficult questions. Of course, it never works.
In this case it was the Sadducees.
The Pharisees were orthodox in their theology, but rejected Jesus because they were not true believers.
The Sadducees, on the other hand, rejected the Resurrection, miracles, and everything supernatural. We would compare them to liberal religious people of today.
Their question came from a place of unbelief, so it was in error from the beginning.
The question stems from Old Testament Scriptures. Deuteronomy 25 teaches that if a man gets married and dies before having a son, his brother is to marry the wife. The first son will be considered the dead man's son.
So, the question is, who's wife will she be in heaven if she was married to all the brothers?
The answer is non of them.
As Christians, we are the bride of Christ.
I will be friends with my earthly wife in heaven, but we will both be the bride of Christ.
Marriage is a sign to the world what our relationship with Jesus is in eternity.
This is why the devil has attacked marriage and the family so aggressively.

The Sadducees' biggest problem was that they rejected all things eternal.
Trust Christ for your salvation now and forever.
God bless you all, Pastor Scott

2 Chronicles 9:1-12
The Queen of Sheba’s Praise of Solomon

1 Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem to test Solomon with hard questions, having a very great retinue, camels that bore spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about all that was in her heart. 2 So Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing so difficult for Solomon that he could not explain it to her. 3 And when the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, 4 the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his cupbearers and their apparel, and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the Lord, there was no more spirit in her.
5 Then she said to the king: “It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. 6 However I did not believe their words until I came and saw with my own eyes; and indeed the half of the greatness of your wisdom was not told me. You exceed the fame of which I heard. 7 Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom! 8 Blessed be the Lord your God, who delighted in you, setting you on His throne to be king for the Lord your God! Because your God has loved Israel, to establish them forever, therefore He made you king over them, to do justice and righteousness.”
9 And she gave the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold, spices in great abundance, and precious stones; there never were any spices such as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.
10 Also, the servants of Hiram and the servants of Solomon, who brought gold from Ophir, brought algum wood and precious stones. 11 And the king made walkways of the algum wood for the house of the Lord and for the king’s house, also harps and stringed instruments for singers; and there were none such as these seen before in the land of Judah.
12 Now King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all she desired, whatever she asked, much more than she had brought to the king. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.
NKJV

There are many things people can become famous for.
Benedict Arnold is famous for turning against his country and treason.
There are "Influencers", some who compromise their character to gain fame, clicks, or money. Others stand out for leaving prosperity to fight for something bigger than themselves-Pat Tillman comes to mind.
Some of these things are great. Others are not, and even have unintended consequences.
But, Solomon was famous for his wisdom.
The queen of Sheba came to test him. She departed from King Solomon enlightened, richer, and more blessed than how she came to him.
Remember what King Solomon's wisdom was a gift from God because he asked for wisdom from the One who could give it.
Let's also seek God's wisdom and leave this kind of mark on the world as well.
God bless you all.

1 Chronicles 17:1-15
God’s Covenant with David

1 Now it came to pass, when David was dwelling in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under tent curtains.”
2 Then Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”
3 But it happened that night that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, 4 “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “You shall not build Me a house to dwell in. 5 For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought up Israel, even to this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another. 6 Wherever I have moved about with all Israel, have I ever spoken a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar–’”’ 7 Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel. 8 And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a name like the name of the great men who are on the earth. 9 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 10 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel. Also I will subdue all your enemies. Furthermore I tell you that the Lord will build you a house. 11 And it shall be, when your days are fulfilled, when you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your seed after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son; and I will not take My mercy away from him, as I took it from him who was before you. 14 And I will establish him in My house and in My kingdom forever; and his throne shall be established forever.”’”
15 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
NKJV

It was in the heart of David to bless the Lord.
God had been so good to David. He went from an insignificant shepherd boy, dismissed by his own father, to a giant killer, to a king with many mistakes and trials along the way.
David noticed all the houses being built for man, but God did not have a house, He still had a tent to live in.
When David told Nathan the prophet what he wanted to do, Nathan told David to do everything that was in his heart.
But Nathan did not speak for God. God corrected Nathan, who corrected David.
Instead, God would bless David and his son Solomon.
David was so full of gratitude for what God had done for him. He just wanted to bless God in return.
They say that it is the thought that counts.

How do you respond to the overwhelming blessings of God?
The Lord deserves our everything. Let's present ourselves as living offerings to our Lord who is so worthy.
Pray about how you can serve the Lord this week.
God bless you all, Pastor Scott

Proverbs 4:1-9
Security in Wisdom

1 Hear, my children, the instruction of a father,
And give attention to know understanding;
2 For I give you good doctrine:
Do not forsake my law.
3 When I was my father’s son,
Tender and the only one in the sight of my mother,
4 He also taught me, and said to me:
“Let your heart retain my words;
Keep my commands, and live.
5 Get wisdom! Get understanding!
Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
6 Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you;
Love her, and she will keep you.
7 Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding.
8 Exalt her, and she will promote you;
She will bring you honor, when you embrace her.
9 She will place on your head an ornament of grace;
A crown of glory she will deliver to you.”
NKJV

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

It is said that wisdom is truth properly applied.

When we follow and obey the commandments of the Lord and remove ourselves from those who practice lawlessness, we will see God's blessings in our lives.

Seeking wisdom is oftentimes dismissed as being a dumb thing to do.

Many people will reject you when you make God the priority in your life.
Do it anyway.
I would rather have God's approval over man's approval every day of the week.
Let's choose the Lord and His wisdom and be blessed by our King.
God bless you all, Pastor Scott

Proverbs 3:31-35
31 Do not envy the oppressor,
And choose none of his ways;
32 For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord,
But His secret counsel is with the upright.
33 The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked,
But He blesses the home of the just.
34 Surely He scorns the scornful,
But gives grace to the humble.
35 The wise shall inherit glory,
But shame shall be the legacy of fools.
NKJV

I oftentimes think about what kind of legacy I will leave for my children.
With my wife, I raised them from when they were babies. They are both adults now.
We taught them to honor and respect authority.
They were taught to respect us, their parents.
I instilled into them, in whatever they do, "Do it like you mean it."
I want all the best for them in life, including health and prosperity.
I want my children to do better in life than I did.
But, if I don't teach my children to love Jesus and model that for them, then I have failed in life and have not left a meaningful legacy for them.
If we haven't done that, it's not too late.
Let's leave the only legacy for our children that really matters.
Let's teach Jesus by word and deed.
God bless you all, Pastor Scott

1 Chronicles 4:9-10
Jabez

9 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.
NKJV

In the middle of this genealogy that takes up several chapters, we see this man that we know very little about.
Can you imagine having his name? "He will cause pain."
I think I would be upset by that name. But Jabez prayed that he wouldn't cause pain to others.
He prayed for prosperity, not in a shallow sense. He also wanted his life to be a blessing to others.
Jabez could have chosen to be a victim. He could have lashed out at others. He could have used what people did to him as an excuse to be selfish and hurt others. Instead, Jabez used his unfortunate name to motivate himself to not cause pain to others.

We need to remember that we are not what other people say we are. We are not what those voices in our heads say we are.
We are who Jesus says we are. We are so valuable to Him that He shed His own blood to redeem us from sin and death.
Let's believe His Word, not the words of our enemies.
God bless you all, Pastor Scott

Proverbs 30:32-33
32 If you have been foolish in exalting yourself,
Or if you have devised evil, put your hand on your mouth.
33 For as the churning of milk produces butter,
And wringing the nose produces blood,
So the forcing of wrath produces strife.
NKJV

Many people in the world try to elevate themselves through dishonest means. This includes lying stealing, hurting others, and manipulation.
This goes hand in hand with devising evil because those things are evil.
You should be able to get ahead by your own efforts. Then you will be lifted up by the Lord.
There is no excuse for a Christian to do this. When we do, we are saying that we don't trust God for the results.
I've seen this happen in the church, and it is shameful.
These actions are compared to the churning of milk to make butter and the wringing of the nose, which produces blood.
Both are actions against resistance. This is something that has to be done intentionally.
We either trust God or we don't. This is true in every part of our lives.
Let's submit ourselves to the Lord and trust Him for the results. We will be blessed in the long run.
God bless you all, Pastor Scott

2 Kings 17:1-18
Israel Rejects the LORD and the LORD Rejects Israel

1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea the son of Elah became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned nine years. 2 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, but not as the kings of Israel who were before him. 3 Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against him; and Hoshea became his vassal, and paid him tribute money. 4 And the king of Assyria uncovered a conspiracy by Hoshea; for he had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and brought no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.
5 Now the king of Assyria went throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria and besieged it for three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away to Assyria, and placed them in Halah and by the Habor, the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.
7 For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and they had feared other gods, 8 and had walked in the statutes of the nations whom the Lord had cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. 9 Also the children of Israel secretly did against the Lord their God things that were not right, and they built for themselves high places in all their cities, from watchtower to fortified city. 10 They set up for themselves sacred pillars and wooden images on every high hill and under every green tree. 11 There they burned incense on all the high places, like the nations whom the Lord had carried away before them; and they did wicked things to provoke the Lord to anger, 12 for they served idols, of which the Lord had said to them, “You shall not do this thing.”
13 Yet the Lord testified against Israel and against Judah, by all of His prophets, every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways, and keep My commandments and My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets.” 14 Nevertheless they would not hear, but stiffened their necks, like the necks of their fathers, who did not believe in the Lord their God. 15 And they rejected His statutes and His covenant that He had made with their fathers, and His testimonies which He had testified against them; they followed idols, became idolaters, and went after the nations who were all around them, concerning whom the Lord had charged them that they should not do like them. 16 So they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, made for themselves a molded image and two calves, made a wooden image and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. 17 And they caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, practiced witchcraft and soothsaying, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. 18 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them from His sight; there was none left but the tribe of Judah alone.
NKJV

The Northern Kingdom of Israel completely rejected the LORD by turning to idolatry. In addition to idolatry, they turned the witchcraft and the sacrifice of their children to Molech.
When the LORD rejected Israel, He simply turned them over to the sin and wickedness that they chose for themselves.

If you are living a life that has rejected God, don't be surprised if He honors your decision.

Brothers and sisters, let's walk as close to the Lord as we can and receive all the blessings He has for us. It's a much better and fulfilling life.
God bless you all, Pastor Scott

2 Kings 12:1-16
Jehoash Repairs the Temple

1 In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba. 2 Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him. 3 But the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.
4 And Jehoash said to the priests, “All the money of the dedicated gifts that are brought into the house of the Lord—each man’s census money, each man’s assessment money—and all the money that a man purposes in his heart to bring into the house of the Lord, 5 let the priests take it themselves, each from his constituency; and let them repair the damages of the temple, wherever any dilapidation is found.”
6 Now it was so, by the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, that the priests had not repaired the damages of the temple. 7 So King Jehoash called Jehoiada the priest and the other priests, and said to them, “Why have you not repaired the damages of the temple? Now therefore, do not take more money from your constituency, but deliver it for repairing the damages of the temple.” 8 And the priests agreed that they would neither receive more money from the people, nor repair the damages of the temple.
9 Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in its lid, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one comes into the house of the Lord; and the priests who kept the door put there all the money brought into the house of the Lord. 10 So it was, whenever they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king’s scribe and the high priest came up and put it in bags, and counted the money that was found in the house of the Lord. 11 Then they gave the money, which had been apportioned, into the hands of those who did the work, who had the oversight of the house of the Lord; and they paid it out to the carpenters and builders who worked on the house of the Lord, 12 and to masons and stonecutters, and for buying timber and hewn stone, to repair the damage of the house of the Lord, and for all that was paid out to repair the temple. 13 However there were not made for the house of the Lord basins of silver, trimmers, sprinkling-bowls, trumpets, any articles of gold or articles of silver, from the money brought into the house of the Lord. 14 But they gave that to the workmen, and they repaired the house of the Lord with it. 15 Moreover they did not require an account from the men into whose hand they delivered the money to be paid to workmen, for they dealt faithfully. 16 The money from the trespass offerings and the money from the sin offerings was not brought into the house of the Lord. It belonged to the priests.
NKJV

It was the job of the priests to take care of the needs of the temple, but they allowed it to fall into disrepair. It was King Jehoash who held the priests accountable for not doing their job.

It is very easy for us to find ourselves going through the motions of a spiritual walk, but have no real dedication to the Lord.
If we find the temple of God falling into disrepair in our hearts, it is time to refocus on our Lord.
Let's truly seek Him and rededicate our hearts to serve the Lord.
God bless you all, Pastor Scott
