Matthew 22:23-33
The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?
23 The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 24 saying: “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. 27 Last of all the woman died also. 28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
In many places within the gospels, the religious leaders try to trick and trap Jesus with difficult questions. Of course, it never works.
In this case it was the Sadducees.
The Pharisees were orthodox in their theology, but rejected Jesus because they were not true believers.
The Sadducees, on the other hand, rejected the Resurrection, miracles, and everything supernatural. We would compare them to liberal religious people of today.
Their question came from a place of unbelief, so it was in error from the beginning.
The question stems from Old Testament Scriptures. Deuteronomy 25 teaches that if a man gets married and dies before having a son, his brother is to marry the wife. The first son will be considered the dead man's son.
So, the question is, who's wife will she be in heaven if she was married to all the brothers?
The answer is non of them.
As Christians, we are the bride of Christ.
I will be friends with my earthly wife in heaven, but we will both be the bride of Christ.
Marriage is a sign to the world what our relationship with Jesus is in eternity.
This is why the devil has attacked marriage and the family so aggressively.
The Sadducees' biggest problem was that they rejected all things eternal.
Trust Christ for your salvation now and forever.
God bless you all, Pastor Scott
