Just a reminder:
We have baby deer at Oakwood as we always do this time of year. If you are walking or driving and see them laying in the grass, they are not sick. They are merely resting and their mama is near by. Please respect their space by keeping your distance and just sneaking a peek as you slowly pass by. And please, DO NOT try to touch them or scare them in any way. Your scent can cause great harm to them. We are so lucky to have a various amount of wildlife in the cemetery. So please treat all with the same respect we have asked for with regards to those at rest and the grounds there. We thank you for your cooperation.

On this Memorial Day we come together as a community to honor and to thank all those who have served this great nation. We hope you will join us at Oakwood Cemetery for the annual Memorial Day service. On note: Due to all the rain we've had, Dave Robertson of the American Legion has asked us to move it this year to higher ground. So it will be held up-top in the Oakwood section behind the office (by the Columbarium).

And Alison is at it again. When I talked with her today she was back to continue cleaning the Scroggs monuments. The family and its descendants are the ones who gave Bucyrus the Scroggs House, which houses our Historical Society. As you can see, the difference she has made on these monuments is amazing. Check out the tall one I'm standing beside (that's me in the blue top & sunglasses. ) Thank you Alison Kovac and Randy Fischer for taking on the cleaning. Anyone wishing to learn about monument cleaning, watch this page for further info. I would've never thought it possible to clean some of these monuments. Check out the last pic in particular for a side by side look.

ATTENTION!!! Those who wish to help Alison Kovac with more headstone cleaning at Oakwood Cemetery this coming week (or were planning to come out for the first time just to learn “the art of the trade”), she has found it necessary to change the date/day of the week for this session. It will NOW be held on TUESDAY, May 19, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The session will begin at the Hopley grave site in the morning and proceed to the Scroggs site in the afternoon. Here are a couple of photos from this past week’s labors. This is an exceedingly valuable project as a part of the Society's contribution to America 250. Do consider being involved!

We welcome our newest board member, Alison Kovac. As the former curator of the Bucyrus Historical Society, she comes to us with a wealth of knowledge about the history and stories of some of the founders of our city, now at rest in Oakwood. She also is very skilled at cleaning monuments and even offers classes to those wanting to learn how to clean their family monuments, and to keep them looking good. Alison grew up in the Bucyrus area and still has many ties to the community and to Oakwood Cemetery. Thank you Alison, for caring about protecting our beautiful space. These photos show her work and how effective the cleaning is when done properly to preserve the monument.

Once again, we need the community's help and understanding as we navigate some very rough waters. As a nonprofit organization with limited funds, equipment maintenance had to be moved to a back burner in recent years. But that only works for so long. And our backhoe finally let us know it's broken! That is bad under the best of circumstances, but this time of year it's terrible. The backhoe is critical to our small grounds crew being able to do their jobs effectively. For example, even with a backhoe it takes a skilled operator several hours to dig a grave. We do have a Track hoe, but it can't handle nearly what the backhoe can, including leveling and seeding new graves. With the backhoe currently in the shop for major repairs our crew will be doing the digging for leveling by hand. That won't be quick and the mowing and weed-eating must be moved to another back burner while the crew prioritizes as best they can. So your cooperation is appreciated as we are still down staff and the grass is growing like crazy. Please say a little prayer that Southeastern Equipment can get all the parts they need quickly and get the backhoe back to us ASAP and it doesn't break the bank! Thank you for being patient with the crew.

Last week I saw a man picking up sticks in an area of Oakwood. So I stopped to thank him. He told me he needed kindling for camping this year. It occurred to me that it was a win-win for all of us! So, if you are a camper in need of kindling, we have an abundance of sticks this year that have blown all over the cemetery. You are welcome to bring your children and a bucket or two to one of our sections to gather some up. And If you could also stack anything you don't want along the little roadway that borders the sections, our crew will come along next week and throw them into the dump truck. As always, your help is appreciated and we're happy to provide you with kindling in return.

Spring has sprung and our grounds' crew has been busy. We've received many positive comments about this FB page and its ability to provide clarity and answers to questions. So, I wanted to take a few minutes to address a couple questions that have come to us regarding timing issues for new graves and monuments, and our office hours.

1. Why is the office not open everyday anymore?
Due to financial constraints, we no longer have office personnel. The office is staffed part time by Audrey, who is one of our grounds crew members. So, while we do have posted office hours for 2 hrs in the morning and 2 hrs in the afternoon, those are always subject to change. If we have funerals that day or need to prep for funerals the following day, or clean up following funerals, the office will be closed because Audrey is needed "up top" as our staff refers to the cemetery grounds. We do monitor phone calls however, forwarding them to staff cell phones, and we provide a drop box for payments, etc. If our staff is up on the grounds and you need to reach someone, please call the office phone and leave a message.

2. Why hasn't my family's grave been leveled or seeded yet?
If you are wondering why it takes so long for a new grave to be leveled and seeded, it is because our crew needs to wait at least 6 months for the ground to settle, so they can add soil wherever needed before leveling. Please keep in mind that depending on the time of year the burial took place, it can take as many as 9 or 10 months for some graves before leveling and seeding can occur. For example, if the 6 months is up in October, it will be the following Spring before it can be seeded, as we cannot seed past September.

3. Why does it take months to get a monument installed?
This question is probably best answered by the monument companies, but I'll give it a go from our perspective. Each monument must be mounted on a concrete footer, which are dug and poured only twice a year by the monument companies. And as you may know, concrete must have time to "cure" or set-up or whatever it is to be hard enough to support the weight of a several hundred pound monument. That takes time and we live in Ohio, so weather is always a factor in timing. Then the monument itself must be ordered, cut to specifications, etched, and engraved. Each of those is a separate stage. So again, patience is the key. Like the seeding, it is usually months before a monument is ready for the monument company to install it.

I hope this helps to answer your questions. We certainly understand that grieving families just want the grave to look nice. And so do we. But it is a process with many steps to it, and with other companies involved. And though it may not always seem like it, everything at Oakwood has safety and sound reasoning behind it. Oakwood is only one of the many cemeteries our funeral homes and monument companies serve. So, we are fortunate and grateful to be dealing with really good ones. Finally, we are always happy to answer your questions. We may not always be able to give you the answer you want to hear, but we will do our best to explain the reasons for our response.

What a beautiful day it is today! Amazing what a change 24 hours can bring. We got hit pretty hard by yesterday's storms, but a huge thanks to our crew, who were out with their trusty chain saws. As you can see by these photos taken yesterday, floral arrangements were scattered everywhere. Luckily, most of the graves were still relatively bare from Spring cleanup.

I've noticed a few comments voicing frustration and accusing our crew of taking things off graves. So I feel I should address those frustrations here in case there are others.

Please understand that our crew has far too much to do in order to care for the nearly 100 acres of ground and 20,000 graves everyday to spend time removing flowers and such from graves. It is important for community members to understand that we have indeed had to change the rules over the years as trends and purchased decorations have changed. For example, we've found that the cute little spinners, butterflies, and pinwheels that are on needle type spikes meant for garden decorations, are easily tangled in our weed-eating string and thrown through the air like darts. We have far too many people in the cemetery for that to NOT be a problem. So, for the safety of all, we have had to change the rules to address that to make sure they are not used at Oakwood. And our crew WILL remove them. The same is true of loose items on headstones. One of our crew members was actually hit in the face with a rock, which had been placed on the base of a monument, bumped off by the mower, and thrown across the grounds to where they were working. So, those and other loose items WILL be removed. All of our rules and regulations are made for the safety of both our crew and the community. So, we ask for your patience, your understanding, and your willingness to compromise when it comes to the safety of all. Our crew members have the utmost respect for the families and the graves of all those at rest at Oakwood. They do not and will not remove anything that is within the guidelines of the rules. But 70 MPH winds blowing through the cemetery can and will remove just about anything. And our crew has no idea what item came from what grave. I have found my husband's arrangements down in the ravine more times than I can count and I know very well how to attach them as securely as possible. So, please be patient and don't take out your frustration on our grounds crew. I have been shocked and have cringed at some of the verbal abuse and threats they have been on the receiving end of. They deserve better. We all understand that most members of the Bucyrus community are absolutely wonderful people and we are grateful. It's only a few who make it difficult for everyone else. Thank you in advance for your patience.
