Flood Relief Supply Distribution — Tonight & Wednesday

Immanuel Chapel Church will be open tonight, Monday, August 24, from 5:00–7:00 PM, and again Wednesday, August 26, from 5:00–7:00 PM for families affected by the recent flooding to come in and pick up available supplies.

We currently have a variety of donated items available, including:

- Clothing
- Food
- Hygiene items
- Cleaning supplies
- Household essentials
- And more

If you or your family were affected by the flood and could use some help, please stop by during either of these times. These supplies were generously donated to help our neighbors as they continue recovering, and we want to make sure they get into the hands of the families who need them.

Please feel free to share this post so we can reach as many flood-affected families as possible.

Community Supply Distribution — Today & Saturday

Immanuel Chapel Church will be open today, Friday, August 14, and Saturday, August 15, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM to distribute supplies to our community.

Over the past few weeks, our community has been incredibly generous in donating food, water, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, paper products, pet food, and many other items in response to the recent flooding.

We want to continue to honor the heart and purpose with which those donations were given. Families who have been affected by the flood will remain our first priority.

At the same time, because of the generosity we have received, we recognize that there are other families in our community who may be struggling as well. As supplies allow, families experiencing other needs are also welcome to stop by and receive some of the items we have available.

Our desire is to be good stewards of everything that has been entrusted to us—to continue serving those recovering from the flood while also making sure that available resources are not left sitting when they can help a neighbor in genuine need.

We are incredibly thankful for every person, church, business, and organization that has given, volunteered, prayed, and helped our community over these past few weeks.

Pastor Spencer Cunningham here. I wanted to take a moment to say a few things.

These last four days have been nothing short of crazy. It all started with a little church that simply had a desire to help its community. I watched as partnerships began to form, and what I thought would be a small operation began to grow.

Yesterday, with a lot of help from nearly 45 volunteers, our little church was able to serve more than 250 meals and assist 5 households and one business with flood cleanup. Those volunteers came from across this great state—representing churches and organizations, or simply coming from a holler with a heart to help.

We also had teams traveling throughout the community, checking on neighbors, making welfare checks, and delivering water and other needed resources. I am equally grateful for every person who served in these ways and for all the help that poured out from volunteers across our community.

I went into the homes alongside the volunteers, and together we helped families clear out what the flood had destroyed. We stood in the midst of loss and devastation—and yet, together, we were able to bring hope.

A light is meant to be placed on a lampstand. I am beyond grateful for every person who stood with us this weekend and gave their time and effort to make sure that light shined brightly throughout our community.

I cannot say thank you enough to everyone who helped make the first effort of Upshur Together such a success.

I couldn’t help but think of this story:

It was low tide, and as the ocean receded, starfish had become stranded on the beach. A young boy was running from one starfish to the next, tossing them back into the water one by one.

An old man saw him and said, “You’re wasting your time. It doesn’t matter—you will never save them all.”

The little boy paused and smiled at the old man. He knelt down, picked up another starfish, and tossed it back into the water.

“No,” the boy replied, “but it mattered to that one.”

Our community and the surrounding areas have a long road ahead. We West Virginians are so good at pulling together. So, my word to you—my community—is this: Be like the boy in the story.

Help where and how you can. No matter how small that help may seem, it matters.

Tomorrow is our community cleanup day, and we're praying for a great turnout as we work together to help our neighbors recover from the recent flooding.

Whether you've been impacted by the flooding, are working in the cleanup efforts, or simply need a place to sit for a while, we'd love to serve you.

Immanuel Chapel Church and our community partners are coordinating a volunteer cleanup and recovery effort on Sunday, July 26, to aid those affected by the recent flooding in Upshur County.

This partnership, Upshur Together, is about neighbors, churches, organizations, and volunteers working side by side to help our community recover.

If you are 18 years or older, and you are interested in assisting with our efforts, we would love to have you join us this Sunday.

We will meet at Immanuel Chapel Church (65 S Kanawha St., Buckhannon WV 26201) for check-in at 9am. Volunteers will then be assigned to teams, given safety briefings, and dispatched to flood-affected locations. If you are unable to arrive by 9am, we will be able to connect volunteers with teams throughout the day. Teams will work in the morning and the afternoon with lunch provided for all volunteers. Work will conclude by 4pm.

For safety purposes you must wear boots, pants, and a long sleeved shirt. If you have them, please bring gloves, an N-95 mask, and supplies like shovels, push brooms, buckets, and other cleaning items. If you are willing to let us borrow a cooler for the day, we encourage you to bring one.

FLOOD RELIEF UPDATE

We have been greatly encouraged by the individuals, churches, and organizations reaching out with a desire to help our community.

While plans and logistics are still being developed, we have made a donation link available for anyone who feels led to give. Donations will be used to support flood-relief efforts and provide assistance to those who have been impacted.

We are meeting this evening to discuss next steps and will share more information soon regarding needed supplies, drop-off instructions, volunteer opportunities, and other ways to help. Until then, please watch for an updated needs list before bringing donations to the church.

A QUICK UPDATE FROM IMMANUEL CHAPEL

Several people, churches, and organizations have reached out asking how they can help, and we are incredibly grateful.

We have spent today connecting with others and beginning to work through how Immanuel Chapel can best serve our community in the days ahead. We will be meeting tomorrow to discuss next steps and hope to share more specific information soon regarding donations, volunteers, and other ways to help.

For now, please continue praying for everyone affected. Thank you for your patience and your willingness to help us love and serve our neighbors well.

UPDATE: All of the families who came to the church tonight have now been able to make safe sleeping arrangements with family, friends, or elsewhere. Since everyone who was with us has found a place to stay for the evening, our volunteer has gone home and the church is no longer staffed or open overnight.

We are incredibly thankful that we were able to provide a safe place during the storm, and our desire to help our community has not changed. We will continue doing everything we can to assist families in the days ahead. Please continue to pray for everyone affected and for the first responders still working throughout our community.

The doors of Immanuel Chapel Church are open for any individuals or families who have been displaced or need a safe place to stay. If you or someone you know needs shelter, please don't hesitate to come.

If you are in the area and are able to help, we are also asking for donations of essential supplies for families in need.

Items such as bottled water, non-perishable food, toiletries, baby supplies, blankets, pillows, clothing, cleaning supplies, and other necessities would be greatly appreciated.
If you are able to volunteer your time or lend a helping hand in any way, your support would mean so much during this difficult time.
