The greatest evidence that faith is at work is the
soul’s firm belief that God is everywhere. The
believer constantly watches for the works of
God’s providence. Indeed, this is why the Scripture
says a Christian “walks with God” and endures “as
seeing him who is invisible” (Gen 5:24; Heb 11:27).
God’s Word presents a full and complete doctrine
of God’s providence. Providence reaches not only to
things we consider as important, but also to what we
would consider very insignificant, below our notice.

The Ultimate Test of our Spirituality
“The ultimate test of our spirituality is the measure of our amazement at the grace of God.”

The more clearly a person understands God, sin, Christ’s cross, and salvation, the more astonishing grace becomes. Spiritual maturity does not produce the thought, “God was wise to save me.” It produces: “Why would God show mercy to someone like me?”

Why amazement is such an important test:

- It reveals whether we understand the holiness of God. If God is infinitely holy, His willingness to receive guilty sinners is astonishing.

- It reveals whether we understand our sin. Grace seems ordinary only when sin seems small.

- It destroys spiritual entitlement. The self-righteous person thinks he deserves God’s favor; the Christian knows that salvation is entirely undeserved.

- It magnifies Christ’s cross. Grace is free to us, but it was purchased through the blood of the Son of God.

- It produces humility, gratitude, worship, and obedience rather than pride and self-congratulation.

FIRE IN MY BONES

Oh, wonderful heart of man! who can understand thee, who can estimate the heights to which thou canst rise, or the depths to which thou canst sink? What an infinitude of bliss and of sorrow is within thy compass! How radiant thy heavens, how dark thine abyss! It is well for us when we learn to distinguish between the life of our emotions and that of our SPIRIT AND WILL and resolve to live no more in mood or emotion, but to build the edifice of our life upon the granite of the obedient will.

From this finished work flows all the saving benefits of the covenant of grace: full pardon for the guilty, perfect righteousness for the ungodly, peace with God for the estranged, adoption for the orphaned, sanctification for the defiled, and eternal glory secured for all who are in Him. There is no saving blessing outside this Christ, but in Him there is an inexhaustible fullness
