Daily Devotional for August 16

Scripture:
Galatians 5:13. “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” (NASB)

Observation:
Take control of your desires. We should have only one desire—to do the will of God. That should be our number one focus, but so often we say, “What about what I want?” If our wants become our goal in life, then we have missed the boat when it comes to Christ and walking the walk with Him. If it is all about our wants and desires for ourselves, then how can we serve God? We cannot serve two masters. I was looking forward to the Praise and Worship at our church. I love to sing to our God and give Him praise. My desire burned with in me as I drove to church. I had some praise and worship music on the radio and sang loud unto the Lord. I wanted to escape the worries of the week in praising Him. When I got to church, there was a small problem that needed attention. I missed the praise and worship. Sadly, as I looked back, I realized it was selfish praise that I was willing to offer Him. My desire was about me and not Him. I wanted to sing to make me feel better not praise Him. My worship was really tainted in selfish desire. It has to be ALL FOR HIM. Is your desire for Him or for yourself?

Application:
• Personal Application: Continue spending time with the Lord daily. Sow righteousness and reap the fruit of God's unfailing love.
• Family Devotional: Read this chapter to your family. Ask them if anything spoke to them as you read. Daily Devotional for April 26, 2023

Scripture:
1 Peter 4:12 “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you.” (NASB)

Observation:
Some people call it Murphy's Law... After going to bed, a man remembered that he left the light on in the basement and tells his wife, “I’ll will be back in a minute.” About an hour later, he returns to bed. She asks, “What took you so long?” He replied, "I went to the basement to turn off the light and saw the faucet leaking. So, I began to turn it off and broke the valve off. I had to turn the water off to the house to fix the valve. In doing that, I tripped over a box on the floor. When I went to grab something so I wouldn't fall, I grabbed the light fixture by mistake and broke that off." The man finally said to his wife, "After fixing the light, I fixed the faucet, picked up the box, and here I am." His wife asked, "Did you turn off the lights?" He replied, “I'll be right back. Today's verse speaks of not being surprised by the fiery ordeal in which we go through for it is for our testing. In life, we will have times of struggle and testing. The important thing is how we face them. With Christ with us and in the power of the Holy Spirit, we can get an A+ on our tests! Don't forget to turn off the lights!

Application:
• Personal Application: Continue spending time with the Lord daily. Sow righteousness and reap the fruit of God's unfailing love.

• Family Devotional: Read this chapter to your family. Ask them if anything spoke to them as you read. Talk about their answers and show them that one important aspect of this chapter is that we must continue to spend time with the Lord and keep our hearts focused on His plans and purposes. Daily Devotional for April 21, 2023

Scripture:
John 17:23 “I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.” (NASB)

Observation:
Too often, we can sit back and say that the church of today is missing the point. That our needs are not being met, and that the church is falling short of what and where it should be if we have our eyes upon Jesus. If the same people who point the fingers at the churches would open their hands to help, the church would have more than enough volunteers to help and more than enough money to get projects done. The church is us – we who believe in Jesus Christ, but it is so easy to sit back and want to be taken care of. Years ago, my truck blew its head gasket. I had been doing the work myself, but I reached a point where I was over my head and needed help. I had to step back and look at it from a new perspective. It wasn’t about me doing the job, it was about the job getting done. So often we look at church as what can it do for me. Maybe we should be asking what can I do for the church.

Daily Devotional for April 20, 2023

Scripture:
Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (NASB)

Observation:

There was an old saying growing up about a wish sandwich, it was a sandwich where you had two pieces of bread and wished you had some meat! I was blessed to grow up never really having or wishing for a wish sandwich, but I knew some kids who did. When it came time for lunch at school, you would find them sitting alone and secretly opening their empty bags, not wanting to face the embarrassment of not having a lunch like others! Today’s verse speaks to us about letting our light shine before men so that God gets the glory! One day, I decided to share my lunch. I had heard at church on Sunday, the story of the Good Samaritan and thought why I can’t act the same way! It was rather awkward, as I approached the table and sat down next to one of my friends. As I opened my lunch, I gave him half my sandwich without saying a word. The smile on his face was enough to know I had not only shared a sandwich, but I had shared something deeper. In the Discipleship Resources found at men.ag.org, there is a resource entitled “Demands of Discipleship” and within that resource is a lesson entitled “Where’s the Beef”. It speaks about faith and works and how faith is dead without works. I wanted to share my faith in that lunchroom, so I worked it out!

Pray for them.

Daily Devotional for March 30, 2023

Scripture:
Psalm 51:12 “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit.” (NASB)

Observation:
There is a huge difference. Any man can walk into a vintage auto auction and purchase a restored antique truck or car, but the man who finds an old clunker and begins to restore it, finds pleasure more than just purchasing it. Today's verse speaks of asking God to restore the joy of our salvation and sustaining us with a willing spirit. Even though the time, effort, and pain staking job of restoring an old vehicle will seem almost overwhelming at times, if the man stays firm on the path of restoration, the end result will be something he can be proud of. In life, there will be times of restoration, times of painstaking effort, and action to restore our lives and relationships to a new and better place; we must have a willing spirit and the best place to find that is in God. Ask Him for the willing spirit, the drive, if you will, to see the job completed, but know there will be struggles along the way. If we hold firm to Christ and allow Him to restore us, we will see our lives changed in ways we never imagined possible. Just like that old vintage truck that now drives down the road and turn heads, we can turn heads for Christ in ways we never imagined. Stay strong on the path, and ask God for a willing spirit to keep us steady.

Pray for them.

Daily Devotional for March 8, 2023

Scripture:
1 Thessalonians 5:11. “Therefore, encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.” (NASB)

Observation:
As most of you know, I love Men’s ministry. Recently, I was asked why I spend so much time in it. I usually joke and say that it is because I live with four women (my wife and three daughters), but beneath the surface it is purely a selfish reason. You see, I love to see grown men, fathers, single men, husbands, workers of all trades, coming together to share the common bond we have in Jesus Christ. I love to see men worship in song and dance (yes there are some men who are comfortable enough in who they are to dance!) I love to see men fall on their faces before their God recognizing the incredible love He has for them. I mostly like to watch two or three men go and pray for one another. It warms my heart, and I find the strength to go on and experience it once again. I really do not have to search for spiritual manhood; I find it at each men’s meeting when we gather to praise and worship our God and not be afraid of what the world thinks of us. To me it is a blessing. I pray that men who read this will find a group of other men to experience the same joy. If you cannot find one, start one!

Daily Devotional for March 7, 2023

Scripture:
Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.” (NASB)

Observation:
Sometimes, it's not about the fishing. While sitting dockside one day, I observed a unique exchange. One fisherman was catching all the fish while another one sat and wondered why he wasn't having as much success. I watched as the man, who wasn't catching anything, walk over to the successful fisherman. They spoke for a moment, then the successful one reached into his tackle box and handed the other man something. Soon, both men were catching their fair share of the fish. Today's scripture speaks of giving and it will be given to you, pressed down, shaken together and running over. As I continued to watch, the once unsuccessful fisherman was gathering up his gear to leave, but before he walked away, he went back to the man who shared "his secret," and gave him the bucket of fish he caught. When he poured his fish into the other man's bucket, it overflowed with fish! I learned the lesson of today's verse in real-life action! I wonder how much we are giving as we wonder why our buckets are empty.

Pray for them.

Daily Devotional for March 3, 2023

Scripture:
Matthew 7:13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it." (NASB)

Observation:
Sure, it would have been easier to go that other way, but we would have missed what we were looking for! Sometimes the path of life can take you down a road that may lead one way but when you get there, it was nothing like what you planned. While working Ground Zero, shortly after the buildings collapsed, we needed to get to a certain location that was blocked by piles of debris. There was a path all the way around the rubble, but it wouldn't have gotten us to where we needed to be. Today's verse speaks to us about a wide and narrow gate, one leads to destruction and the other leads to life! We had decided to begin to clear the narrow path and finally arrived at the location we needed to be, shortly after arriving we got the report that the other way around had been completely destroyed when another part of the buildings collapsed! Choosing the right path may have obstacles but life is much better than destruction and that Way is choosing Jesus Christ, for He is the Way! Choose wisely my friends!

Daily Devotion for February 25, 2023

Scripture:
Isaiah 40:31 “Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.” (NASB)

Observation:
When our lives become all about us and not about Him, we will inevitably find it hard to wait. Paul often spoke about trials and sufferings and how they could never compare to the glories that will be revealed to us (Romans 8:18). But to have the glories revealed, we must wait patiently, secure in the knowledge that God is in control. My wife and I have been in situations where we needed God’s hand upon the outcome. We prayed and waited, prayed and waited, and trusted. In His timing, the situation was resolved, but the waiting wore on us. I was amazed at how sometimes I would get frustrated waiting and she would have strength. Then there were times when I would strengthen her, but it always came down to having faith and trusting in God and knowing He was in control. Sure we had the choice to do things our way, but I knew the outcome would not have been as peaceful, and things would definitely be different in regards to the situations we prayed for. Oh and what’s probably worse is the fact that our relationship with Him would have been tarnished. The trust and faith between God and us would have been broken. How long does God have to wait patiently for us to learn to wait on Him?

Application:
• Personal Application: Continue spending time with the Lord daily. Sow righteousness and reap the fruit of God's unfailing love.
• Family Devotional: Read this chapter to your family. Ask them if anything spoke to them as you read. Talk about their answers and show them that one important aspect of this chapter is that we must continue to spend time with the Lord and keep our hearts focused on His plans and purposes. Daily Devotion for February 20, 2023

Scripture:
Hebrews 10:25 “…not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” (NASB)

Observation:
“Maybe I should check it.” During a hard rain, my wife commented that she heard our sump pump kick on a few times in the last hour. So, I thought I better go down and check it out to make sure everything was okay. Today's scripture speaks of not forgetting to get together, about encouraging one another. It didn't take that long to go and check to make sure things were running right, and as I did, I thought about how long it had been since I checked on it. Sometimes life gets busy, and we forget things and people that may need to be checked on. Maybe we've lost touch and need to reach out to see how things are going. With modern technology, it doesn't take but a moment to send a text, a Facebook message, or a Snapchat to just say hello. You’re being thought of, prayed for, etc. No one likes to get their feet wet, but everyone likes a friendly hello. What are you waiting for? Text a friend!

Application:

Personal Application: Continue spending time with the Lord daily. Sow righteousness and reap the fruit of God's unfailing love.

Family Devotional: Read this chapter to your family. Ask them if anything spoke to them as you read. Talk about their answers and show them that one important aspect of this chapter is that we must continue to spend time with the Lord and keep our hearts focused on His plans and purposes. Pray for them.
