Here is a good word from our missionary Dan Bardwell.
Joshua 7:21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
I kind of feel sorry for Achan. Talk about a man who had it made and screwed everything up. The temptation was just too much for him. The first round of Jews were killed in the wilderness, he and his family made it and were already in the promise land. The first battle in the land was miraculously won; his family already had the plot of land promised to his family through Judah. He also just saw Moses killed by God and Joshua get the power of God on him. God was working!
He sold out everything for his cut of the dream in the world…. The best clothing and some pocket change… I feel sorry for Achan because his whole family was destroyed because he gave up so close to the finish line. He sought his fame in something carnal, something here instead of eternal…
At least he sold out for the very best! Christians today sell out for almost nothing and then when they get to Heaven, they are without rewards… I mean, a wedge of gold of 50 shekels is worth is a fortune, it was worth 6 to 10 years income of the day. We call it a nest egg now instead of a wedge… on top of that, did you know 200 shekels of silver is found twice in the Bible and both times are related to stealing and something bad: here being stolen, and in Judges were a son stole a bunch of silver and returned it, then they took 200 shekels of that silver and make an idol.
Don’t quit studying the KJB, don't quit drawing closer to God, don't quit witnessing for God...don’t quit on God for some temporary comfort today. Don’t covet the price of an idol, fashionable clothing or a big nest egg. These were so valuable to a coveting Achan that he had them, and then had to hide them in the ground of his tent. He couldn’t even enjoy his temporary comforts, then to have nothing going into eternity... I feel sorry for Achan and those who live like him.
Job 28:12-15 But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding? Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living. The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me. It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
