This Sunday's sermon will begin a series on worship. Some of this article might show up in the message.

What is the regulative principle of worship? Put simply, the regulative principle states that nothing ought to be introduced into gathered worship unless there is a specific warrant of Scripture.

We will be having Sunday worship at 11:00 a.m. We will enjoy singing some Christmas hymns, and the sermon will be entitled, "The Staggering Claim of Christmas."

If you have no church home, or the place where you usually worship is skipping Lord's Day services in favor of the holiday, we invite you to worship with us for this one Sunday. We would welcome your attendance. Look for our location at ProvidenceBCS.org

Important insights from David Wells:

"It is not that theological beliefs are denied, but that they have little cash value. They don’t matter. I likened the situation to that of a child who is in a home but who is ignored. It is not that the child has been abducted; the child is there. The child is in the home, but has no legitimate place in the family. And, again, research which I have had conducted strongly points to the fact that where this kind of theological character is crumbling, there the centrality of God is disappearing. God now come to rest lightly and inconsequentially upon the Church."

David Wells spoke prophetically to the church in his day, and his voice still carries to our own. Read an excerpt from this important address.

A good reminder for all of us:

When I see young people running away from God, acting in the most offensive ways they can imagine, I see my younger self. I see lost people who are in desperate need of Christ. Why didn’t even one Christian talk to young me about Jesus?

This is the way yesterday we observed today's most important holiday -- that, and we sand A Mighty Fortress and other appropriate hymns.

From Sinclair Ferguson:

Those who enjoy such assurance do not go to the saints or to Mary. "Those who look only to Jesus need look nowhere else. In Him we enjoy full assurance of salvation. The greatest of all heresies? If heresy, let me enjoy this most blessed of "heresies"! For it is God's own truth and grace!"

Let us begin with a church history exam question. Cardinal Robert Bellarmine (1542–1621) was a figure not to be taken lightly. He was Pope Clement VIII's person

"...[T]here is no such thing as preaching Christ and him crucified, unless you preach what now-a-days is called Calvinism....It is a nickname to call it Calvinism. Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else. I do not believe we can preach the gospel, if we do not preach justification by faith without works; nor unless we preach the sovereignty of God in his dispensation of grace; nor unless we exalt the electing, unchangeable, eternal, immutable, conquering love of Jehovah, nor, I think, can we preach the gospel, unless we base it upon the peculiar redemption which Christ made for his elect and chosen people...."

-- Charles Haddon Spurgeon, in a sermon entitled "Christ Crucified," found in Spurgeon's Sermons, Volume 1 of 10, page 89.

This Sunday, Providence will welcome Rev. John Canales. Those who attended our service of installation and recognition last year will remember that Pastor Canales gave one of the charges during that service.

Pastor Canales is presently the pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Flower Mound, but he is in the process of making preparations for serving as a missionary in the south Pacific. He will be talking about his plans for mission work during our Sunday School hour at 10:00 before preaching during our morning worship service.

This will be a great Sunday to attend at Providence!
