From the Maine American Red Cross:
Following the fire and explosion at the Searsmont lumber mill, we've seen an outpouring of support for blood collection across the state. Over the past 10 days, a number of organizations and individuals have approached the Red Cross in hopes of scheduling urgent blood drives to directly support the first responders injured in this incident.
As you all know, community blood drives are scheduled with several months of lead time, and we typically do not have the capacity to schedule new drives with little-to-no-notice. Moreover, it is the blood already on shelves that saves lives following emergencies like what happened in Searsmont or in Lewiston years ago, as collection, transportation, testing and delivery of blood products takes time that patients of acute trauma do not have. Put simply, those injured in the Searsmont incident were saved by the people who donated weeks ago, but we do not want that to discourage any donor from making an appointment today.
"Maine Stands Together" is a statewide, virtual blood drive initiative intended to provide all those wishing to stand in solidarity with all first responders an opportunity to contribute to the blood supply in a unified way while educating the public that any blood collected "today" serves the often-unforeseen needs of "tomorrow." Our hope is that Mainers rally behind this virtual blood drive (using our Bloodlink platform), and that it inspires additional donors to make appointments at upcoming existing drives near them. As we enter the summer, we can stave off our usual seasonal blood shortages by collecting as many units as possible in the coming weeks; we hope this effort will do just that.
