ACTS 9
“Behold, he is praying.” – Acts 9:11

It would seem that Saul spent three days, without sight, food, or drink (v. 9), yet praying all the while. What happened during those hours of prayer changed Saul into the great apostle Paul. Prostrate there before his Lord, Saul was emptied of all self-righteousness, pride, and arrogance, and filled with such a burning love for Christ that nothing could dim until he finished his course.

“Behold, he is praying.” This was the attitude Ananias was to find him in – one of utter humility and self-abnegation. It was only when Paul had voluntarily and deliberately assumed this position and attitude that he could receive these three: (1) sight – what a spiritual sight Paul had; (2) the filling of the Spirit – Paul could write from experience saying, “Be filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:18); and, (3) strengthening – he finished the race (2 Tim. 4:7).

O, that I might have just a portion of
Paul's experience, Lord.

ACTS 8

“Give me this power also.” – Acts 8:19

In verse 13, it is recorded of this Simon that he believed, was baptized, and continued with Phillip. From all external appearances, it would seem that he was a sacred man. But as Peter says in verse 22, Simon's heart was not right in the sight of God. This was manifested in the way he coveted the power of God for his own ulterior motives. “He offered them money” (v. 18). What an act of utter ingratitude! Is it any wonder Peter says, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money” (v. 20).

“Give me this power also.” He did not desire it for God's glory. He merely wished to become as “someone great” (v. 9). He had not the love of the Father, but the love of the world. Notice that: “Simon saw … the laying on of the apostles' hands” – lust of the eyes (v. 18). “He offered them money, saying ‘Give me’” – lust of the flesh (vv. 18-19). “Anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit” – pride of life (v. 19).

Personal power is fleeting and for fleshly gain.
True power is from You and for Your Glory. Amen.

ACTS 7
“Brethren and fathers, listen.” – Acts 7:2

What has impressed me more than anything else in the reading of this chapter is Stephen's amazing knowledge of the now known “Old Testament.” From the second verse until the fiftieth, he gives a most comprehensive and yet precise resumé of Old Testament history. How he must have studied the Scriptures! How acquainted he must have been with them, for a flow of language concerning his subject such as seen in these verses would have otherwise been impossible. The Holy Spirit only brings to remembrance such things as one has learned. Stephen must have been a real student of the Word, as was His Master.

Give me the power and needed grace, Lord,
to study to show myself approved unto God
rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

ACTS 6
“It is not desirable that we should leave the
word of God and serve tables.” – Acts 6:2

It was not for lack of humility that the apostles said these words. It was rather that the teaching and preaching of the Word of God should not be hindered. This was “desirable,” or that which was right or proper. Serving tables, though a duty important in itself, was decided to be committed into the hands of men who were spiritually qualified to perform it.

The serving of tables consisted of the pecuniary transactions of the Church. For they had all things in common (Acts 4:32), and this meant that there had to be those who should distribute equally to all the material needs of the Church. The lesson in the above verse, however, is that, first, it is “desirable” to hold the ministry of the Word in the place of special importance; and yet not to neglect the secondary duties in connection with the work of God.

The preaching of Your Word and the
ministry to Your people are both important works.
Help me to put them in proper priority.

ACTS 5
“They did not cease teaching and preaching
Jesus as the Christ.” – Acts 5:42

It is very instructive to notice the order of the two words “teaching and preaching.” The disciples first taught the Lord Jesus Christ, then preached Him. This is undoubtedly a principle which should strictly be regarded when working among people who do not really know the message of the Gospel.

There is no doubt also in the order of the two words “Jesus as the Christ.” It is not “Christ Jesus” here but “Jesus” (Savior) “the Christ” (the Anointed or Sent One). In teaching and preaching to the unsaved, it would seem from this verse that the order should be Jesus as Savior, then Christ as the Anointed One. This is certainly true in experience.

Let the example of Your disciples be my guide
when reaching the world for You, Lord.

ACTS 4
“Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you
more than to God, you judge.” – Acts 4:19

These words were spoken by Peter and John to the rulers of the people and elders of Israel. They express the spirit of boldness and faithfulness which had stirred these poor fishermen, to “speak the things which [they had] seen and heard” (v. 20). The apostles themselves confess that they simply were compelled to speak for their Master, whatever the rulers and elders had to say.

Notice that their testimony was given “in the sight of God” (v. 19). Here was faithfulness. There were no ulterior motives or selfish desires. There was no attempt to please man. They were certain of the rightness of their testimony, for it was in the sight of God.

O Lord, inspire me with this zeal and
holy boldness. Grant to Your servant, that with
all boldness, I may speak Your Word.

ACTS 3
“Power or godliness.” – Acts 3:12

It is not without significance that Peter chooses these two words to describe the means through which the lame man was made whole. Notice that while Peter and John take no honor for the miracle, there is an obvious implication that the two essentials were power and godliness (or holiness, KJV). It is true that it was not their power and holiness, but it is also clear that power and holiness were necessary if God were to work. The apostle Paul in his introduction to the epistle of the Romans speaks of Christ thus, “Jesus Christ … declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness” (Rom. 1:4-5). Christ is therefore the embodiment of these two great forces, and Christ was in and working through Peter and John.

Make clear to others, Lord, that it is Your power
and holiness that work through me.

ACTS 2
“For the promise is to you.” – Acts 2:39

The promise of the filling of the Holy Spirit was not for the early apostles only. This very verse clearly indicates that the promise is for as many as the Lord our God shall call. If the promise to me is the same as to the early disciples, it follows that the power for witness that they had should also be my power.

The apostle Paul teaches later in his epistles that it is every Christian's responsibility to “Be filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:18). The Lord Jesus taught before He left this earth, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him” (Luke 11:13).

Lord, teach me how to claim this promise rightly,
that I may be useful to You.

ACTS 1
“A witness with us of His resurrection.” – Acts 1:22

It is very obvious from this verse and the surrounding verses that the fundamental qualification of a true witness is the knowledge of and the conscious responsibility to testify concerning the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation stone of all Christian doctrine. For, “If Christ is not risen, [our] faith is futile; [we] are still in [our] sins” (1 Cor. 15:17). The crucifixion of Jesus could be the martyrdom of a good man, but the resurrection of Jesus seals the death as being the atoning death of the Son of God.

How important then to be a true witness to the resurrection of my blessed Lord.

Lord, help me never to leave it out of my preaching.

JOHN 21
“Cast the net on the right side of the boat.” – John 21:6

Months and years have come and gone. Yes, gone forever. If I dare take stock of how I spend my time, what answers would or could I sincerely give to such questions as: “What progress have I made spiritually over the last year? What have I done to help extend the kingdom of God? How many souls have I won for Him? What fruit is apparent as a result of my ministry among God's people?” To such questions, I have to confess by way of answer that I have toiled all night and, generally speaking, have caught nothing.

Give me grace, Lord, to obey Your message to my heart –
“Cast the net on the right side of the boat.” Amen.
