Have you experienced some storms in life? Everyone has.

Have you CAUSED some of the storms in your life? If so, you're not alone. Even the famous evangelist John Wesley had to learn some lessons the hard way. He was eager to serve God and people, but his perfectionism got in the way (and caused tons of drama). He needed to learn about grace.

Tomorrow we hear the story of John Wesley's come-to-Jesus moment, when he realized he was forgiven. He didn't have to earn God's love, and neither do you.

This image depicts Wesley on a boat to Georgia with German Moravians, who displayed a profound faith in God (by singing hymns in the middle of a storm) that inspired Wesley.

Romans 4:3-8

3 What does the scripture say? Abraham had faith in God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. 4 Workers’ salaries aren’t credited to them on the basis of an employer’s grace but rather on the basis of what they deserve. 5 But faith is credited as righteousness to those who don’t work, because they have faith in God who makes the ungodly righteous. 6 In the same way, David also pronounces a blessing on the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from actions:

7 Happy are those whose actions outside the Law are forgiven,
and whose sins are covered.
8 Happy are those whose sin isn’t counted against them by the Lord.

Romans 5:1-4

5 Therefore, since we have been made righteous through his faithfulness, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 We have access by faith into this grace in which we stand through him, and we boast in the hope of God’s glory. 3 But not only that! We even take pride in our problems, because we know that trouble produces endurance, 4 endurance produces character, and character produces hope.

Tomorrow we hear the Word from the Letter of James in our New Testaments. The book of James should probably get more attention, since the author is understood to be the brother of Jesus! It contains essential Christian wisdom and ethics, very close to the lessons Jesus himself teaches in the gospels.

James 4:13-17 -- Warning the proud and wealthy

Pay attention, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such-and-such a town. We will stay there a year, buying and selling, and making a profit.” You don’t really know about tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for only a short while before it vanishes. Here’s what you ought to say: “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” But now you boast and brag, and all such boasting is evil. It is a sin when someone knows the right thing to do and doesn’t do it.

What kind of impact can parents have on the spiritual lives of their children? A HUGE one! Do you know the names of the children in your church? Do THEY know that you pray for them? Having mature, spiritual adults in the life of a child is an enormously transformative thing.

Revelation 2:1-5

1 “Write this to the angel of the church in Ephesus:

These are the words of the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven gold lampstands: 2 I know your works, your labor, and your endurance. I also know that you don’t put up with those who are evil. You have tested those who say they are apostles but are not, and you have found them to be liars. 3 You have shown endurance and put up with a lot for my name’s sake, and you haven’t gotten tired. 4 But I have this against you: you have let go of the love you had at first. 5 So remember the high point from which you have fallen. Change your hearts and lives and do the things you did at first. If you don’t, I’m coming to you. I will move your lampstand from its place if you don’t change your hearts and lives.

Tomorrow, we hear God ask the question, “Is your anger a good thing?”

This is what God asks the prophet Jonah when Jonah balks at the mercy of God, shown to the repentant people of Nineveh. We often love it when God forgives us, but we want punishment for others.

Thankfully, God is more merciful than we are, and God works to teach us to expand our circle of compassion, so that we care about the well-being of everyone.

After worship, we have a fish fry for lunch! Bring your family or a friend!

Read Jonah, chapter 4, below:

4 But Jonah thought this was utterly wrong, and he became angry. 2 He prayed to the Lord, “Come on, Lord! Wasn’t this precisely my point when I was back in my own land? This is why I fled to Tarshish earlier! I know that you are a merciful and compassionate God, very patient, full of faithful love, and willing not to destroy. 3 At this point, Lord, you may as well take my life from me, because it would be better for me to die than to live.”
4 The Lord responded, “Is your anger a good thing?” 5 But Jonah went out from the city and sat down east of the city. There he made himself a hut and sat under it, in the shade, to see what would happen to the city.
6 Then the Lord God provided a shrub, and it grew up over Jonah, providing shade for his head and saving him from his misery. Jonah was very happy about the shrub. 7 But God provided a worm the next day at dawn, and it attacked the shrub so that it died. 8 Then as the sun rose God provided a dry east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint. He begged that he might die, saying, “It’s better for me to die than to live.”
9 God said to Jonah, “Is your anger about the shrub a good thing?”
Jonah said, “Yes, my anger is good—even to the point of death!”
10 But the Lord said, “You ‘pitied’ the shrub, for which you didn’t work and which you didn’t raise; it grew in a night and perished in a night. 11 Yet for my part, can’t I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than one hundred twenty thousand people who can’t tell their right hand from their left, and also many animals?”
