Before the Civil War, the Black press advocated antislavery. After the War, it advocated emancipation, and contributed to rebuilding Black communities. March 16, 1991, Latasha Harlins was shot dead by a Korean store owner who accused her on stealing a bottle of orange juice despite authorities confirming Harlins had the money in her hand. The shooter Soon Ja Du received no prison time and was sentenced to probation. Harlins was 15.
