(Proverbios 22, 6)

Parents, Please Be Careful: You May Be Losing Your Children

As a priest, one of the saddest things I see at Mass is children and teenagers sitting in church wearing headphones, watching videos, playing games, or completely disconnected from what is happening at the altar.

I understand that parenting is not easy. Children can become restless, bored, and distracted. Sometimes handing them a tablet seems like the easiest solution. But parents, please be very careful. We may be solving a short-term problem while creating a much bigger long-term one.

The Holy Mass is not simply another event. It is an encounter with Jesus Christ. It is where heaven touches earth. It is where our children learn to pray, to listen, to be silent before God, and to recognize His presence.

If a child spends every Mass watching a screen, how will they learn that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist? If they never experience the beauty of prayer, how will they develop a relationship with God? If their attention is always captured by entertainment, how will they hear the gentle voice of the Lord speaking to their hearts?

Faith is not learned only through religious education classes. Faith is learned by being present. It is learned by watching mom and dad kneel in prayer. It is learned by seeing parents sing, respond, listen, and reverently receive Holy Communion.

Children may not understand every word of the Mass, but they are always learning. They are absorbing. They are watching. They are forming habits that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Many parents worry that their children will leave the Church when they become teenagers or young adults. Yet we must ask ourselves: Have we taught them to pray? Have we taught them to encounter Jesus? Have we helped them understand why Mass matters?

The greatest gift we can give our children is not the latest technology, the best education, or the newest opportunities. The greatest gift we can give them is a living faith and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Parents, do not underestimate the importance of bringing your children fully into the Mass. Talk to them about the readings. Teach them the prayers. Help them follow along. Be patient when they are restless. The effort is worth it.

One day your children will leave your home. They may forget many things you taught them. But if they learn to love Jesus, if they learn to pray, and if they learn that the Mass is sacred, they will carry that treasure for the rest of their lives.

Our children do not need more screens. They need more encounters with Christ.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, who taught Jesus and formed Him in faith and love, help all parents to lead their children closer to her Son.

PRAYERS TO SAY WHILE PREPARING FOR HOLY MASS
Preparing Your Heart Before Meeting Christ in the Eucharist

“Many Catholics prepare physically for Mass by dressing appropriately and arriving on time. But how many of us prepare spiritually before entering the church?”

The Holy Mass is the greatest prayer of the Church and our most intimate encounter with Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. Because of this, the Church encourages the faithful to approach Mass with prayerful preparation and recollection.

While there is no single universal prayer that every Catholic must say before Mass, many saints and spiritual writers have encouraged prayers of preparation that help dispose the heart to receive God’s grace more fruitfully.

1. BEFORE LEAVING HOME
Before stepping out for Mass, it is good to pause briefly and place the day in God’s hands.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ, as I prepare to attend Holy Mass, help me leave behind distractions, worries, and sins. Open my heart to Your Word and prepare me to receive You worthily in the Holy Eucharist. Amen.

Why It Matters:
This simple prayer helps shift our focus from daily concerns to the sacred encounter that awaits us.

2. ON THE WAY TO CHURCH
The journey to church can become a pilgrimage of the heart.
Instead of allowing our minds to wander, we can use the time to prepare spiritually.

Prayer:
Lord, I am coming to meet You. Increase my faith, strengthen my hope, and deepen my love. May this Mass transform my heart and bring me closer to You. Amen.

Why It Matters:
This prayer reminds us that we are not simply attending an event but coming into the presence of God.

3. UPON ENTERING THE CHURCH
When entering a Catholic church, many Catholics genuflect before the tabernacle as a sign of reverence for Christ truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.

This is also a beautiful moment for prayer.

Prayer:
My Lord and my God, I believe that You are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I adore You, I thank You, and I offer this Mass for Your glory and the salvation of souls. Amen.

Why It Matters:
This prayer helps us acknowledge the Real Presence of Christ and enter into a spirit of worship.

4. BEFORE MASS BEGINS
The minutes before Mass are often filled with conversation, distractions, or looking around.

Instead, they can become precious moments of preparation.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, unite me with the prayers and sacrifices of the whole Church. Help me participate fully, attentively, and devoutly in this Holy Mass. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Why It Matters:
This prayer prepares us to listen to God’s Word and unite ourselves with Christ’s sacrifice on the altar.

5. WHAT THE SAINTS TEACH US
Many saints emphasized the importance of preparing well for Mass.

St. Padre Pio famously said:
“It would be easier for the world to survive without the sun than to do without the Holy Mass.”

The saints understood that the fruits we receive from Mass are often linked to the devotion and preparation we bring to it.

6. WHY SHOULD WE PREPARE FOR MASS?
We prepare for important meetings, weddings, examinations, interviews, and celebrations.
How much more should we prepare to encounter Christ Himself?

Spiritual preparation helps us:
* Pray more attentively
* Listen more carefully to God’s Word
* Participate more devoutly
* Receive greater spiritual fruits from the Eucharist

The better prepared our hearts are, the more fruitful our participation in Mass becomes.

IN SUMMARY
Preparing for Holy Mass begins long before the opening hymn.

A few moments of prayer at home, on the way to church, upon entering the church, and before Mass begins can help us approach the altar with greater faith, reverence, and devotion.

The Holy Mass is heaven touching earth.

Our preparation should reflect the greatness of the gift we are about to receive.

Today, Reflect:
Do I arrive at Mass merely present in body, or do I prepare my heart to meet Christ?

“The more carefully we prepare for Holy Mass, the more deeply we can receive the graces God desires to give us.”

Now you know.

✝️ 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 𝗧𝗢 𝗔𝗩𝗢𝗜𝗗 𝗔𝗧 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗬 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗦

The Holy Mass is the highest form of worship and the source and summit of the Christian life. Because Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, Catholics are called to conduct themselves with reverence, respect, and devotion.

Here are some common practices to avoid in order to show proper reverence at Mass:

✝️ 𝟭. 𝗨𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗪𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

The church is a sacred place of prayer. Avoid unnecessary talking before, during, and after Mass so that others may pray in peace.

✝️ 𝟮. 𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗔 𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗢𝗨𝗦 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡

Arriving on time allows us to prepare our hearts for worship and participate fully in the Sacred Liturgy.

✝️ 𝟯. 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝗔𝗙𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗬 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗡

After receiving Our Lord in the Eucharist, remain in prayer and thanksgiving. Unless necessary, stay until the Mass has concluded and the priest has given the final blessing.

✝️ 𝟰. 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗚𝗨𝗠 𝗜𝗡 𝗖𝗛𝗨𝗥𝗖𝗛

Chewing gum is inconsistent with the dignity of the sacred liturgy and may violate the Eucharistic fast if done before Communion.

✝️ 𝟱. 𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗡𝗢𝗡-𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥 𝗣𝗨𝗥𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗘𝗦

Silence or turn off electronic devices. Avoid texting, browsing, or other distractions during Mass.

✝️ 𝟲. 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗨𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗥 𝗕𝗢𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗚

When entering or leaving a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the tabernacle, genuflect reverently. If unable, make a profound bow.

✝️ 𝟳. 𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗟𝗬 𝗖𝗔𝗦𝗨𝗔𝗟 𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗥𝗘

Dress modestly and respectfully, remembering that we are entering the house of God and participating in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

✝️ 𝟴. 𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗟𝗘𝗚𝗦 𝗢𝗥 𝗦𝗟𝗢𝗨𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗡 𝗔 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗙𝗨𝗟 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗥

Maintain a posture that reflects attentiveness and reverence during the sacred liturgy.

✝️ 𝟵. 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗪 𝗔𝗦 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝗔 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗧

The pew is a place for prayer, worship, and participation. Use the moments before and after Mass for prayerful recollection.

✝️ 𝟭𝟬. 𝗥𝗨𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗔 𝗠𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘

After Mass, spend a few moments thanking God for the graces received before leaving the church.

✝️ 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥

Holy Mass is not merely a gathering—it is the re-presentation of Christ's sacrifice on Calvary and a sacred encounter with the living God.

Let us approach the altar with reverence, devotion, and love.

"Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10
