On Sunday, Pastor Sheri reminded us that God cannot be contained in a neat little box. Even in our differences, questions, and uncertainties, the Holy Spirit continues to move, teach, transform, and call us forward. As Pastor Sheri shared:

“We look to the example of Jesus Christ and we try as best as we can to walk in Jesus’ footsteps… feeding the hungry without judgment, loving, accepting, welcoming, including all in the name of Jesus. Period.”

This Sunday was also Service Sunday, and our hearts are full seeing so many members of our church family step into action with generosity and joy. Thank you to everyone who gave their time, energy, and love in service to others.

This week, Pastor Sheri asks us to: Go out into the world and share the good news of Christ through mercy, justice, grace, and service to others.

This Mission Monday, we’re reflecting on Pastor Sheri’s Pentecost message and the holy disruption of the Spirit. Drawing from Acts 2, she reminded us that Pentecost was never about keeping God contained within walls, languages, traditions, or comfort zones. Pentecost was expansion, the Spirit moved outward, speaking to people in their own languages.

Pastor Sheri spoke honestly about how difficult sharing can be, even within the church. When grace expands, when new voices are welcomed, when those once left at the edges are invited fully into the circle… it can create…tension. But again and again throughout scripture, the Spirit disrupts boundaries humans try to build. The Spirit refuses gatekeeping.

“Pentecost is God’s yes to diversity, unity, and holy disruption.”

Pastor Sheri reminded us that the Spirit does not wait for people to assimilate before they belong. The Gospel was heard in many languages because God meets people where they are, and when the Spirit falls, everybody moves! Nobody remains at the edges. 🫶

This week we are asked to: expand our circle, make room at our table, and recognize the Holy Spirit already is moving among those the world too often overlooks.

This Steamboat Saturday we’re highlighting a photograph of First Presbyterian Church members on October 15, 1922. Men in suits and straw hats stand beside women in cloche hats and long dresses, while children crowd the front rows in suspenders, stockings, and polished shoes. The clothing alone reflects a changing America: the post–World War I era, when fashion, technology, and daily life were rapidly modernizing.

In 1922, Brownsville was a growing border city deeply connected to railroads, river trade, agriculture, and cross-border commerce with Matamoros. The Mexican Revolution had officially ended only a few years earlier, and the Rio Grande Valley was experiencing significant population growth and economic development. Automobiles were becoming more common, electricity and telephone lines were expanding, and the Valley’s citrus and farming industries were beginning to reshape the region’s economy.

This photograph was taken during the same decade Brownsville saw increased paving of streets, expansion of schools and churches, and growing civic organizations. While much of the Valley was still rural, communities like this one were helping shape the social and cultural foundations of modern Brownsville.
