What's Unitarianism? What's Universalism? "Unitarian" was originally meant to point out that the trinity (God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holly Ghost) is nowhere in the Christian Bible. But these days, it generally means we try to avoid the unquestioning acceptance of any holy scripture. Instead, we try as best we can to pursue the free and responsible search for truth and meaning. "Univers

alism" was originally meant to point out that a loving God would never ever send anyone to Hell. These days, it generally means we try to treat everyone with dignity and respect. The Universalist Church of America was established in 1793. The American Unitarian Association was established in 1825. In 1961 they joined together to form the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). The All Souls chapel we occupy was built in 1950. As typical of free thinkers, each congregation/fellowship/local gathering is different. This local group tends to be a god optional, god of your choice "welcoming church." Welcoming in the sense that our doors are open to everyone regardless of their preferred belief tradition, racial identity, and/or sexual identity. We try to be mindful of the Unitarian Universalist Seven Principles: 1) The inherent worth and dignity of every person; 2) Equity, justice and compassion in human relations; 3) Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations; 4) A free and responsible search for truth and meaning; 5) The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large; 6) The goal of world community with liberty, justice, and peace for all; and 7) Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. Some call these "belief." Others call them "principles." There have been good faith efforts to change the Seven Principles this way or that. They were reworded in 1981 to make them less sexist in tone. To find out more, visit us. You can also check out the Unitarian Universalist Association web site at www.uua.org. Just remember, each local group is different.

I am so proud of our publishing directors, Mary Benard from Skinner House Books and Gayatri Patnaik from Beacon Press. The CommonWealth Beacon recently published a story about Benard and Patnaik joining others committed to free speech as they called on Massachusetts lawmakers to pass “An Act Regarding Free Expression” – legislation that would limit harmful book bans and protect the free exchange of ideas.

At a time when the transmission of knowledge, as well as sharing truths about our culture and shared history, is under increasing threat, this legislation offers a path to safeguard debate, dissent, and the freedom to seek truth. At the Unitarian Universalist Association, we take seriously the commitment to advance Unitarian Universalist values in the world and that commitment reaches through all levels of our work, including our passionate publishers.

When Donald Trump announced on Truth Social March 10 that Brownsville would be the site of the first U.S. oil refinery to be built in 50 years, it seemed to come out of the blue.

Happy Easter, Beloveds. As Unitarian Universalists come together to celebrate rituals of this season in a time of so much chaos and violence, I am reminded that the biblical Easter story asks us first to face the realities of grief and loss and the deep injustices of the world, to be in solidarity with those who may not find ease and joy in the days ahead.

As we nurture hope and renewal in community together, may we release the need for a comforting container to hold our attention. With one another’s support and encouragement, let us strengthen our resolve to be with those who have long done the work of justice because their very lives depended on it. May the love that lives at the center of our communities be enough to hold all that is here, on this Easter holiday and in all the days to come.
