You may remember a family we told you all about,

a young mother with two small boys who left an intolerable situation in order to make a better life for herself and her children.
She found a job and a tiny apartment and then brought her mother to live with them so her mom could watch the boys while she worked.

She and her mom sleep on the floor and the boys sleep on a twin bed.

Life for them has not been kind but we at the pantry help out to ease their burden.
This young woman has worked so hard and started to see light at the end of the tunnel!

Yesterday, we received a call from her saying that her brother, his wife and 7 year old son have just come to live with them!

You see, the family successfully escaped the recent nightmare in their country…Just in time!

They, like so many others, left their entire life behind. Their friends, work, pets, kitchens, beds, flowers, memories…

They arrived wearing sweatpants, a t-shirts, sneakers and coats. That’s it, that all.

They have contacted agencies like Catholic Charities that will help them settle and they are waiting for authorization that will allow them to work.

Until then, our food pantry will help as much as possible.
If you would like to help, here’s what we need at the moment….
Food cards Kohl’s cards Target cards… and whatever else you can think of.

During Lent we, as Catholics, are called to walk through the desert with Christ for 40 days and 40 nights.
Some struggle to take even the smallest step.
But we CAN help..
There is no better exercise for the heart than reaching down and lifting someone up!!

HERE'S A PRAYER FROM POPE FRANCIS...OR
SAY A QUICK PRAYER STRAIGHT FROM YOUR HEART!

Prayer for Peace from Pope Francis.

Lord God of peace, hear our prayer!
We have tried so many times and over so many years to resolve our conflicts by our own powers and by the force of our arms. How many moments of hostility and darkness have we experienced; how much blood has been shed; how many lives have been shattered; how many hopes have been buried… But our efforts have been in vain.

Now, Lord, come to our aid! Grant us peace, teach us peace; guide our steps in the way of peace. Open our eyes and our hearts, and give us the courage to say: "Never again war!"; "With war everything is lost". Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace.

Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love, you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters. Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace; enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister. Make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace, our trepidation into confident trust, and our quarreling into forgiveness.

Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation. In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words "division", "hatred" and "war" be banished from the heart of every man and woman. Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands. Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be "brother", and our way of life will always be that of: Shalom, Peace, Salaam!

Amen.

Get ready for National Marriage Week!!
February 7 to February 14

it’s almost time to celebrate the union that has inspired thousands of books, movie plots, industries, not to mention numerous real-life happily ever after’s!

But let’s get real, shall we? Relationships are hard. Marriage? Even harder

Anyone who says marriage is easy is lying. Love needs a little work.

Don’t get me wrong, marriage does have its perks.
For example, you always have someone to remind you that it’s time to put out the trash. You have a live-in spider killer. And someone to bring you soup when you’re sick.

Still, at the end of the day, a relationship consists of two people with different childhoods, preferences, and traumas coming together and building a life.

A life with compromises. And debating. And listening. And conceding.
And Joy. And being selfless.

My spouse and I tell each other, “I love you.” Every day.
We celebrate the day we first met on the 14th of every month.
We hug a lot and we pray the Rosary at sunset. We cook together, so even our worst meals turn out really special because we do it together.!
Rites and rituals are important to us as they are in any marriage.
Marriage is also a lot of fun if you can inject some humor in your day-to-day. And every day offers SOMETHING to laugh about!

Like this piece of advice… before you marry, listen to your fiancé chew. If you can stand that noise for the rest of your life, then go ahead with the wedding.

“My husband and I have agreed to never go to bed angry with each other.
So far, we’ve been up for three days.” Anonymous

FROM MONSIGNOR

Dear Parishioners,

Due to the Severe Winter Storm that is predicted to hit Long Island Saturday, the Confessions and 4:00 PM Mass on Saturday, January 29, 2022 are cancelled.

We do not want to place our parishioners in danger by venturing out Saturday afternoon.
The Masses on Sunday will be offered at 8:30 and 10:30 AM as usual. However, we do urge caution because the conditions will in all probability still be dangerous.
Please remember that when weather is severe we are dispensed from attending Mass by the law itself.

(Also..Monsignor reminded us that YES...we KNOW walking from the parking lot to the doors of the church is dangerous! So please be extra careful.)

HI EVERYONE! Hope the new year is starting off right for you all. And below is a way we can all find a little peace...

Pope Francis has asked that the Church observe the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time as the Sunday of the Word of God.

Pope Francis said: “Devoting a specific Sunday of the liturgical year to the word of God can enable the Church to experience anew how the risen Lord opens up for us the treasury of his word and enables us to proclaim its unfathomable riches before the world.”

Celebration of Word of God Sunday will take place here in the Diocese of Rockville Centre as follows:

WOW! What a great day at the food pantry!

On November 13th., our Squires, led by Thomas Lynch, spent time making gift baskets for our visitors. Cranberry sauce, stuffing, marshmallows and everything else you would want on your table next to your turkey!

That these young people spent time on a Saturday morning making gifts for people they don’t know but who need help…says volumes about their character and heart.

Pictured is Jim Viani, GK. And Thomas. Head Squire.

“let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works” Mat 5:16

These two wonderful guys exemplify that quote.

We are so grateful for all their donations..

On November 20th., The Daisies, Troop 3759, came to the pantry to stock the shelves with their food donations….

Troop leader, Erica Napolitano, led the girls as they helped give out the food, carry the gift baskets to the cars and make our visitors feel welcome!

They may look tiny but don’t be fooled! They’re dynamite in small packages.

So full of energy and happiness, I was exhausted just watching them work.

Erica, you are AWESOME!!

Our pantry volunteers, Joanne, Marryanne, Doris, Margaret and Mark were the managers, directors of traffic and handers-out of turkeys.
These volunteers are ALWAYS there!!!

Turkeys were provided by an incredible parishioner who has never failed to reach out to us. His kindness and generosity leave us all speechless. Thank you Joe and Sam.

SO many families, SO many children will eat well this Thanksgiving.

Thank you everyone.

How often do you hear about someone requesting a bible? A good guess would be..never!

FYI: The bible is really not one single book but a collection of 73 books… a LIBRARY of books, if you will.
46 Old Testament and 27 New Testament books make up the hottest selling “book” today. Yes, the bible is the number one seller of all time.

It also remains one of the more difficult books to read. With all those “sayeth”, “woes” and “camels through the eye of a needle”… There are times when we try to grab some meaning but then give up with a sigh.

Some of us try the old… open-anywhere-and-point. This is supposed to do…um…what exactly?

We recently met a couple who has been living in a shelter motel for 2 years. They are seniors who are ill and lonely and they reached out for a little help.

She needed some tops because this past year she lost 72 pounds. How? Worry, anxiety, depression and fear.

She told us about all the things she and her husband miss by not being in the “real world”, as she calls it.
Going to Friendly’s, Going to Jones Beach, movies, the smell of fresh mowed grass.

She also misses her bible.

D. told me she understands nothing when she reads it but she knows it’s God’s words and she reckons that if Jesus’ own Apostles didn’t get, why should she be different? AMEN!

If anyone has a new or gently used Catholic Bible…and would like to donate it to D., please let us know.

Beginning today, Saturday, Oct.9th., Saturday evening masses will begin at 4 P.M.
Ever wonder why Saturday masses satisfy Sunday mass obligation?
BITD.. days began at sundown! So, for example, Sunday began at sundown on Saturday.
(I know you’re confused, go have a sip of wine)

This was further confirmed by the Jewish practice of observing the Sabbath on Saturday.
According to Jewish law, “Shabbat is a day of rest and celebration that begins on Friday at sunset and ends on the following evening after nightfall.”

Then after the Second Vatican Council a decision was made to permit Masses celebrated in the evening before to “count” towards the Sunday obligation and was codified into Canon Law.

And there you have it.. Saturday evening's mass is a vigil mass.

A special THANK YOU to all who have been donating to our pantry…

On Sunday September 19th, 2021 The Squires had their "INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS"
For those who don't know exactly who the SQUIRES are..
The Columbian Squires is
the official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus. It is a leadership and character development program for Catholic young men, 10-18 years old.
Leadership and character is what our Squires have plenty of!!
So much so that for 2 consecutive years, the Squires have won the "Brother Barnabas Award" for their action against hunger. Only 25 of these awards are given...globally!!!
Their response to the families in need at our own pantry as well as other area pantries has been awesome and inspiring!
Kinda makes you sooo proud, right?

From the left..
Mike Galgano, NYS Squire chairman, Jude, Nick,
Thomas, who is Squire chief, Chris, Monsignor, of course, Alex who is Deputy,
Then Peter Boyle F.G.K., Tyler, Chief Counselor Kevin Spillane and Grand Knight, James Viania.

Thank you Squires!!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE MARIAN GUILD:

Dear Ladies of Saint Paul the Apostle Church,

As President, it is once again my honor and privilege that I welcome you to our 2021-2022 Marian Guild year. This past year has been quite trying, for all of us. I am hopeful that this year will be a better one. Being President, this past year was challenging yet very rewarding. The support I received from my board members and all our members was truly a blessing. The Marian Guild is a great way to meet new people, build friendships, have fun meetings but it is also a great way to help support our Parish. I encourage you to join this year, even if you cannot come to every meeting and be a part of something special.

Our Marian Guild meetings are held every third Wednesday of the month. Our first meeting for the year will be on Wednesday, September 16th t at 7:00pm in the Parish Hall. Our activity for the evening will be a Welcome Back Party, which will include installation of our new officers and a few games of BINGO with wine & cheese. All are welcome to attend our first meeting of the year to witness firsthand what the Marian Guild is all about. We look forward to renewing old friendships and making new ones. We hope to welcome many new women into our organization and look forward to sharing many spiritual and social activities throughout the year. We come together spiritually, to pray, learn, share and reach out to everyone in our parish. Many women of the parish have been sharing their time, talent and treasures for many years. If you, as well, wish to experience the joy of accomplishment, friendship and being an important part of a very special organization, we invite you to renew your membership or sign up and become a new member this year. We promise it will be a wonderful experience. Everyone has a unique talent, and we need your support and ideas to continue the good works of the Marian Guild.

Enclosed you will find our Calendar of Events planned for the year. If you are interested in being a part of any of our committees, please contact me, to find out what you can do to support the Marian Guild. I look forward to welcoming you at our first meeting and may God’s love and blessing be with each of us during the coming year.

See you soon!
