Methods of Jesus: Go

Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples…” (Matt. 28:19).

Go.

It’s a small word, but Jesus gave it a huge emphasis. And I think the meaning of that word is informed by the way Jesus Himself lived it out.

Yes, He left heaven and came to earth. But that’s not all.

Last week, Dan Reed gave an incredibly impactful sermon illustration related to this idea. In an apparent attempt to fill a bucket with water, he placed several bottles of water into the bucket—with the caps still on. The bucket was full, yet there was almost as much empty space around the bottles as was occupied by the water.

The point was simple.

As people of God, we too often try to impact our communities this way. We put institutions and churches into the community and then invite people to come to us.

But we can become so packaged in our traditions, preferences, and cultural tribalism that we never really reach the crevices.

Jesus' "go" looked different.

Jesus “emptied himself” (Phil. 2:7). One might conclude that comfort was among the things He sacrificed.

Jesus went.

Not just to the manger.

Not just to the cross.

He went to the places where the self-righteous and condemning religious elites wouldn't go. He filled the gaps. He removed the lid from the bottle and poured Himself into the empty spaces.

He ate with prostitutes, drunkards, thieves, and even corrupt government officials. Throughout the Gospel accounts, we see even His disciples becoming uncomfortable with some of the people Jesus was willing to engage and the places He was willing to go.

But Jesus wasn't doing it in the name of inclusion or church growth.

He went because of compassion.

And He went with something that could actually change people and communities:

Grace and Truth.

So, are you a follower of Jesus?

Then GO.

Make yourself uncomfortable.

Cross some cultural boundaries.

Enter some places you wouldn't normally enter.

Talk to some people you wouldn't normally talk to.
Better yet, listen to people you wouldn't normally listen to.

Fill the gaps.

And let the world know what an awesome King you have.

Just a thought, but maybe one of the peripheral lessons from Jesus' ministry is this:

If I'm never upsetting the religious elite, maybe I'm not going far enough.

And if you're not yet a follower of Jesus, let me tell you something:

He loves you!

He not only walks on water—He can save your life.

He is the way, the truth, and the life. (John 14:6)

GO.

That's what Jesus did.

And that's what He calls us to do.
