3rd Sunday of Advent
Jesus Is Our Everlasting Father
Christmas 2025
The prophet Isaiah said: “For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)
On this third Sunday of Advent, we recognize Jesus as our Everlasting Father. While He isn’t God the Father, He is the only one who can reveal the fatherly character of God because He is one in nature with the Father. Jesus personifies the protective and compassionate nature of a father who loves His children. He is our Good Shepherd who laid down His life for us.
This distinction as Everlasting Father emphasizes His eternal nature and how under His care we are safe forever. Nothing in all creation can separate us from His love. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end – the One who is and who was and who is to come – the Almighty (Revelation 1:8).
If we desire to know the character of God, all we have to do is consider Jesus. He is the perfect image of the Father and the exact representation of His being. In Him, we can see the fullness of God’s character, including His love and power. Since all things were created through Him and for Him, He has all authority (Colossians 1:15-18). Only Jesus can reveal the Father to us. No one can come to the Father except through Him
(John 14:6).
How comforting to read, “He will be called...Everlasting Father.” Once we became Christians, we became one of His children. We are His and He is ours forever. There won’t be any goodbyes with Him. Nothing in all creation can separate us from His love. Not even death. Instead, dead will draw us nearer to Him and so we praise Jesus as our Everlasting Father
