Surah Al-Fatiha — The Opening

Surah Al-Fatiha is the opening chapter of the Qur’an and is recited in every unit of the daily prayer. At its heart, it is a simple and deeply human prayer: Who created us? What should we live for? Where do we turn when we need help? And how do we know we are on the right path?

It begins with gratitude and a reminder of Allah’s endless mercy. It then reminds us that our lives have meaning and that we will ultimately return to our Creator. Most beautifully, it ends with a humble request—not for wealth or worldly success, but for guidance: to recognize what is right, live with goodness, and remain on a path that brings us closer to our Creator.

“In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.”

“All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds.”

“The Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.”

“Master of the Day of Judgment.”

“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.”

“Guide us to the Straight Path.”

“The path of those You have blessed—not those who have earned Your anger, nor those who have gone astray.”

In just seven verses, Al-Fatiha takes us from gratitude to mercy, from reflection to responsibility, and finally to guidance—a reminder that no matter who we are or where we are in life, we can always turn to our Creator and ask to be guided toward what is good and true.

Some Reflections on Islam: Wisdom Behind Halal and Haram

Islam provides guidance not only for spiritual well-being but also for protecting human health, dignity, and society. Many Islamic teachings contain wisdom that can be understood through reflection, ethics, and scientific discussion.

Zabiha Halal Meat

The Islamic method of slaughter, known as Zabiha, emphasizes compassion, cleanliness, and respect for animals. Scientific discussions about halal meat often focus on blood drainage, hygiene, and animal welfare. The method allows for significant blood removal, which may help reduce conditions that support bacterial growth when proper handling and storage practices are followed. A quick and properly performed slaughter process may also reduce unnecessary stress for the animal and contribute to better meat quality.

Things Prohibited in Islam (Haram) and Their Wisdom

Alcohol

Islam prohibits alcohol because it can harm both individuals and society. Scientifically, alcohol is processed by the body into substances that can damage cells and increase the risk of diseases, including certain cancers, liver problems, and heart-related conditions. It can also affect the brain, impair judgment, reduce self-control, and increase the risk of accidents, addiction, anxiety, and depression.

Pork

Islam prohibits pork as a means of protecting health and purity. Pork products, especially processed meats such as bacon and sausages, may contain high levels of saturated fat, sodium, and preservatives that are associated with health risks. Undercooked pork can also carry parasites and infections that may negatively affect human health.

Blood

The consumption of blood is prohibited in Islam because it can become a source of harmful substances. Blood may carry bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause infections if contaminated. Excessive intake of blood can also contribute to health problems such as iron overload, which may damage the body.

Riba (Interest)

Islam prohibits Riba because it can create financial injustice and exploitation. Interest-based systems may place heavy burdens on people who are already in financial difficulty, increase debt, and contribute to greater inequality between the wealthy and the poor. The dangers of excessive debt have been seen in economic crises, such as the 2008 financial crisis, when millions of people faced severe financial hardship and home foreclosures.

Backbiting

Islam warns against backbiting because words can deeply affect people’s lives and relationships. Speaking about someone behind their back can spread rumors, damage reputations, create conflicts, and cause emotional harm. Instead of exposing people’s faults, Islam encourages sincere advice, kindness, and constructive conversations that help individuals improve themselves and strengthen their relationships.

Haram Relationships

Islam discourages relationships outside the boundaries of marriage because they can often lead to emotional, social, and personal harm. Many such relationships may result in heartbreak, emotional distress, broken trust, privacy violations, and other difficulties. Marriage, in contrast, provides a committed and protected relationship based on love, responsibility, trust, and mutual respect.

The teachings of Islam aim to protect the individual and society by guiding people toward choices that preserve health, dignity, justice, and peace.
