A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 6917 4th Ave, Brooklyn, NY at 11:00 a.m. for Rev. Robert “Bob” Isaksen who served as First Bishop of the New England Synod from 1987- 2000. Pastor Isaksen died at home on March 16, 2026 at the age of 89 following several years of dementia.
Pastor Isaksen graduated from Concordia College and received post-graduate degrees from Luther and New York Theological Seminaries. His internship took place at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Chicago, followed by ordination in 1961 when he was called as pastor to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bronx, New York. He later served as pastor to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Bronx and Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Baldwin, NY, followed by a call to serve as a Mission Director which preceded his election to the office of the bishop of the New England Synod in 1987, a ministry he served until retirement in 2000.
Throughout his years in active ministry, Pr. Isaksen additionally served on boards and committees including Interfaith Coordinating Committee Against Poverty, ALC Hispanic Ministry Convocation, NYC Council of Churches Board of Managers, SW Nassau Inter-Lutheran Cluster, LSA Board of Directors, Board for ELCA Outreach, LWF Advisory and LIRS Standing Committees, Extended ALC-LCA Urban Staff, Eastern District and New England Conference Councils, regional representations to ELCA Church Council, Candidate Regional Assignments, presidency of New England Conference of Church Leaders, ALC Long Island Conference.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly, daughters Elisabeth and Lois and their families. May God comfort all who mourn
