WHAT EVERY CHURCH 'FORMULA' IS SECRETLY SELLING YOU

We all know the feeling: "Give me a quick one, two, three. Give me a predictable outcome." Most of us would rather have a formula from God than deep faith in Him.

A formula feels safe. Follow the steps, and we can be sure all the work we put in will turn out the way we want. We get to decide the result.

Many people carry church hurt from being promised a quick formula in place of deep faith. Give this much money, and God will give you this much money. Wait until marriage, and God will give you a great spouse. Raise your kids in church, and they'll work out fine.

That's a lie, but it's well constructed. Five steps, ten steps, pray this prayer, give this money: formulas are easy to hand out. Put religious and scriptural language to them, and they start to sound like faith.

Every formula is really selling control. The cost: you start placing your faith in the prayer, but not the person we're praying to. There is no formula. It is trusting God.

WHY YOUR DISOBEDIENCE ISN'T ACTUALLY A RULES PROBLEM

This is how God actually changes you: relationship first, then a changed heart, then obedience. It's always heart change before obedience. It's always relationship more than rules.

Sometimes when people confess a sin, they expect to get beaten up with rules. If you have a disobedience problem, the problem is a relationship problem.

If you're finding there's something you're in love with that isn't Jesus, and it's causing you to do things you know don't please Him, that's a relationship problem, not a rules problem.

When you find yourself falling into sin, it's easy to think, "I need some new rules." You do need new rules, but above all you need to surrender in relationship and say, "God, I'm so sorry. Change me."
