Shir HaMaalot

Shir HaMaalot Services and dinner usually take place on the second Fridays of the month, with occasional variation.

Shir HaMaalot, "Song of the Heights," is a volunteer-led, trad-egal havurah that hosts musical Friday night services (often with instruments) and a vegetarian potluck dinner in Prospect/Crown Heights Brooklyn. Join Shir HaMaalot for Shabbat monthly for full Hebrew liturgy services on Friday night with singing and musical instruments, followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner, socializing and more si

nging. Location varies, but usually in the Prospect Heights/Crown Heights area. Email us at [email protected] to join our mailing list.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Grand Army Plaza tomorroe night! Would love some volunteers to step up:

Volunteer for Simchat Torah Across Brooklyn tomorrow night!

We need help setting up, cleaning up, and staffing our "roving help desk" for hour-long shifts. These are all perfect tasks for people who have been coming to STXB for years, who are ready to roll up their sleeves to help make it happen, and/or who can be friendly, kind, encouraging presences throughout the evening.

Hey! The Erev Rosh Hashanah service was highlighted in JTA! Grateful to continue to work to build inclusive community. And special thanks to Prospect Heights Shul for helping with a space and air filters!

Covid cases are rising across the country. But at most synagogues, even those that had strict Covid measures a couple years ago, "it鈥檚 business as usual."

As we count up the days to Shavuot, here is a date to count down to: Shir HaMaalot鈥檚 May service & potluck dinner on Friday, May 12, 6:45pm at Luria Academy, 664 Bergen St.

You read it right: this month marks the return of our much-beloved POTLUCK DINNER! The expanded kiddush we all made happen last month was amazing and joyful and delicious, and this month will be an even more expansive experience.

But, like nearly everything else in a havurah community, a good potluck depends on what WE ALL can come together to do. To eat well, cook (or prepare) generously. If every person coming to services can bring 2 quarts of vegetarian food or beverages for 12, we will all eat well!

Here are some Shir HaMaalot potluck faves from years past:
- Salads (green or grain-based)
- Pasta (in cold salad form, baked ziti, mac n cheese)
- Lentils (stew, dal, cold salad)

2.) Siddurim: Siddurim will be provided.

3.) Food: If staying for dinner, bring something vegetarian to share. We will have two tables, one for non-hechshered food and one for hechshered food. Hechshered food can be packaged food with a hechsher or food from a hechshered kitchen or establishment.

4.) Safety: We want everyone to stay healthy! With that in mind, please note some safety guidelines:
- Vaccination: All adults must be fully vaccinated + boosted, and all children 5+ must be fully vaccinated. If the spreadsheet says your vaccine is on file, you鈥檙e all set! If not, please email [email protected] with proof of vaccination, or bring your vaccine card to the service.
- Masks: Please wear a high quality mask during the service (N95, KN94, or a surgical mask combined with a well-fitting cloth mask). If you have a concern or medical need around masking, please contact the organizing team and we can work with you to accommodate.
- Testing: If you are staying for the potluck, please get a rapid test the day of services.
- If you are not feeling well, please stay home - we鈥檇 love to see you next month.
