Today's Gospel, the Sermon on the Plain in Luke, is a tough message from Jesus as prophet/healer/shepherd in so many ways. He begins his ministry proclaiming the Kingdom of God in Luke 4, a proclamation one incident after the next that breaks the barriers of tradition and inaugurates God's Good News in person as prophet, agent of forgiveness, healer and caster-out of evil spirits.

While Jesus heals individuals, he groups people as well - the poor, the hungry, the weeping, the reviled are all blessed using the plural "y'all." The basilea tou Theou which is Good News is given to the poor as a class word for word.

Add the fact that by the end of today's Gospel the opposite is to be true for the rich and the well-fed, the laughers. Upside-down is the nature of the Kingdom of God and the words of Luke do not hesitate to speak beyond and even instead of the spiritual to the very practical levels of hunger and poverty.

The question raised in this panel's commentary has been whether anything is meant beyond individual actions being the responsibility of discipleship. First, are these words of Prophet Jesus simply eschatological or do they pertain to this age? Mary would say "no." Jesus would say "no."

Does this mean there is a hortatory level to the Kingdom of Grace that extends into the Kingdom of Power? Yes, it does. The book of James and the words of Paul let us know it was seen this way in the primitive Church. Does work on poverty or hunger or sickness belong only to the Administrative State? Not at all. Does it belong only then to individual acts of mercy and kindness? Not at all again. We who are connected to the apostolic teaching are to be salt and light to the world, the society around us. As was Jesus. As were his disciples. As are we his disciples.
