110 Schermerhorn Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201 212-777-8866

The Quaker way of worship is a Meeting of people who seek the inner Light. We sit in silence - no minister leads us; no formal prayers are said nor hymns sung; no religious symbols are displayed. We believe in divine guidance. We wait for the holy spirit to speak in and through

us. This voice we hear is neither an opinion nor a political observation. It comes from the deepest part of the soul. It fills both speaker and listener with profound joy, and touches on the eternal. After sitting in silence and allowing for a suitable period of waiting, if someone is so moved to speak, his or her words may enrich the understanding of those present. Both our silence and our spoken words bring us closer together and to God. Meeting for Worship is at 9:00 A.M. each Sunday (First Day). Midweek Meeting for Worship is 6:30 P.M. each Tuesday. Child Care and First Day School are available during the 11:00 A.M. Sunday Meeting for Worship. After announcements, Social Hour follows the 11:00 A.M. Meeting for Worship. The 9:00 A.M. and Tuesday Evening worships are more informal.

Did you know that there used to be two Quaker meetinghouses in Brooklyn. Here is a photo from the Brooklyn Library, showing the Brooklyn Orthodox meetinghouse. When the "Hicksite" and "Orthodox" branches merged in the mid 20th C, Friends sold this building. It is currently the home of the Apostolic Faith Mission Church.

Meeting for Worship

Meeting for Worship is now in person and online.
9 AM Worship experimented with meeting in person this first day, and this may continue, but as a back-up, be prepared to meet online, (as the meeting house was locked the last time we tried to meet in person.)

Sunday 11 AM Worship takes place in two environments, in person in the meeting house and on Zoom.

Tuesday evening worship will remain on Zoom for the time being.

Attenders to in-person worship should wear a face mask and practice appropriate precautions. Social hour is not resuming at this time.

In-person worship will be separate from the Zoom worship on Sundays. We are not having a hybrid meeting. Because of this divided meeting, it is essential for all announcements to be sent to [email protected], so that they can be included in this email, which goes out weekly, generally on Sunday evenings and Thursday evenings.

Samburu Friends Mission, in Kenya, is run by Samburu Quakers for the people of their community. It includes nine churches, several preschools, one primary school, an evening school for children who are professional shepherds, a dispensary, and peace work. You can watch a video about it (and find a discussion guide with queries to use in your meeting) here:

I visited Samburu Friends Mission from February 14 to March 5 of 2018, and I fell in love with the people I met there – with their faith, their hospitality, their joy, and their resilience. S…
