Grace Church spent our most recent volunteer day planting and composting at Red Hook Farms. Two fields were planted with onions, leeks, cilantro, broccoli rabe, lettuce, fennel and more! These will be picked in time for the Farm Stand opening on June 6, which incidentally is also the next volunteer date where you can get involved!

Our relationship with Red Hook Farms aligns perfectly with Grace’s Core Values. By contributing your time and talent, you serve with compassion in an underserved community. In addition, by supporting a sustainable urban agricultural enterprise that financially benefits the local community, you are working for social justice to address food insecurity by improving access to healthy and affordable food.

If you would like to join us at our next volunteer day, please sign up for Grace Notes at gracebrooklyn.org.

Five Grace Church members traveled to the Trinity Retreat Center in West Cornwall, CT this week for a retreat inspired by Howard Thurman, called "Discovering the Sound of the Genuine," and led by Jasmine Bellamy, founder and spiritual director of Love 101 Ministries. Throughout the retreat, Jasmine emphatically stated, “The Sound of the Genuine is Love.”

"What an incredible retreat we attended for our 'strategic withdrawal,' (Jasmine's description of a retreat)," said Allison Robinson. "Not only did we listen and reflect on the words of Thurman, but we also practiced the silence of solitude."

Retreatants participated in Morning Prayer, Noonday Prayer, Compline, did a Farm Tour, walked the Labyrinth, made new connections, reconnected with acquaintances, and dined on exquisitely prepared food. "We are forever grateful," Allison added. "This experience transformed us!"

Our third Community Dinner took place this past Sunday afternoon; the weather did little to dampen the spirits of our 55 guests! They dined on pasta with meatballs, vegan chili and rice, Caesar salad, garlic bread, and delicious desserts.

We are so grateful for the volunteers who cook, serve, host, and help set up and clean up. These dinners can only happen because of your commitment and energy. A big thank you goes out to the Grace Church School families and members of the Parish who contributed many cakes, cupcakes, brownies, and cookies, not to mention, tiramisu and baklava!

Our next Community Dinner is Sunday, May 17, from 2 - 4 pm. Hope to see you there!

"Easter is makeover time," said one of the Rev. Erika Meyer's helpers at Grace Church on Sunday. With a little help from her friends, AKA some of Grace's younger parishioners, Rev. Erika and the group retold the Gospel story (John 20:19-31) from various perspectives, explaining their stories and how Jesus breathed new life into his disciples through the Holy Spirit.

"Some people in the Bible are one way before Easter and then changed after. It's like they get an Easter makeover," they shared. "Like the first apostles, you can experience God's transformation in your life at a time when you are scared like Peter, grieving like Mary, or unbelieving like Thomas. Easter doesn't just happen to Jesus. It happens in the lives of his followers and of congregations too."

Grace Church spent our most recent volunteer day prepping Red Hook Farms' future plantings by weeding, raking, chopping, and composting.

Our relationship with Red Hook Farms aligns perfectly with our core values: serving with compassion, supporting a sustainable urban agricultural enterprise, and addressing food insecurity. Last year the farm grew almost 20,000 pounds of food!

Mark your calendars for our 2026 volunteer dates: May 2, June 6, July 11, August 1, September 12, October 3, and November 7.

"I have to believe that on the day I decided to break my fast [of not watching the news], that God said, 'Well, I'll give you a little bit of something to appreciate,'" said the Rev. Dr. Allen Robinson reflecting on Easter Day at Grace Church. "In the middle of all [the negative news] was sandwiched a nice little spirit-filled, joy-filled, positive report."

"Hudson Drew, a three-year-old, and his mother, Ashley, live in El Reno, Oklahoma. They were eating at McDonald's and Hudson, who goes by the nickname Huddy, saw an elderly man eating his meal at a table alone. Huddy asks his mother to eat with him and then goes and asks the gentleman, "May I eat with you?" He says yes. So Hudson grabs his plate and goes and sits with the man, and they have a conversation," shared Rev. Allen. "These two individuals who don't know each other are modeling for us what it means to be an Easter people. When we give a little bit of ourselves to others who are in need, or when we show a little bit of compassion for someone, we fulfill the mandate of God's kingdom."

"Each and every day when we get up and celebrate a new Easter moment, [we can see that] God is in the process of renewing. We should feel invigorated. We should feel joyful. We should feel glad and thankful that God has had mercy on us, and that God is calling us to engage this world with the love of Jesus Christ. That's the Easter message. God's gift to us in the resurrected Christ is nothing short of an act of kindness and generosity from the divine."

Our interactive Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday Service included Liturgy of the Palms, a Procession in the streets of Brooklyn Heights, and Holy Eucharist with the Choir. Members read the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ According to Matthew in lieu of the sermon, and it was wonderful to step outside and wave our palms singing "Hosanna!" We hope you'll enjoy these photos from Ellen Wallop, Allison Robinson, Linda Wexelblatt, and Elder Maxwell. 📸

Join us tonight at 7:30 pm for our Maundy Thursday Holy Eucharist with the Choir, Washing of Feet, Stripping of the Altar, and Vigil at the Altar of Repose until 10 pm.

Tomorrow for Good Friday, we will have services at 12 noon and 7:30 pm with the Choir. And, on Sunday, Easter Day, at 8 am, 9:15 am, and 11 am with the Choir join us for the Feast of the Resurrection to shout "He is risen!"

All are welcome to join us in worship in person at Grace Church Brooklyn Heights (254 Hicks Street) or online!

After carrying palms in the streets with hosannas in the air, Professor Gertrude G. Croom reminded us that the cry of "save us" does not lead away from suffering, but through it. To be saved is to join God in setting the world right—a labor which will always cost us something. May we bear witness to it this Holy Week and all our days.

03/29/2026

As we step into Holy Week, we also stepped into the streets of Brooklyn Heights, singing "Hosanna!" in our annual Palm Sunday procession. May you have a blessed Holy Week!

"Jesus came to defeat death in all its forms," said the Rev. Erika Meyer at Grace Church Brooklyn Heights. "As resurrection people, he empowers us to do the same."

"The abundant life Jesus talks about can happen in the here and now. It's not just for up when we're in heaven. We practice and participate in this gift of abundant life when we stand up to oppression and isolation," she added. "The latest example of this is our Grace Community meal and our October shelter, ...when we march and write letters and when we use our time and talent to stand up to something wrong in the world."

Rev. Erika also remembered her father, who recently passed away and also had a special calling. "My father created a coalition of church folks, social workers, and community partners, and this group, together, provided shelter and programs for girls at risk around his Skid Row parish in Detroit... He was especially touched that the girls from the shelter liked to pray evening prayer with him, and that those who became new moms wanted their babies baptized."

May we all follow our special callings and find ways to provide hope to those around us, in the name of Jesus.
