Is cultured meat halal?
It's a question manufacturers and biotech firms are starting to ask, now that cultivated meat is approved for commercial sale in Singapore (2020), the United States (2023), and Israel (2024).
HCC's Shariah Board — M***i Abdul Sattar Madani (Head of Shariah Board) and M***i Mohammed Ajmal Umari (Member of Shariah Advisory Board) — examined the question through classical Hanafi and Hanbali fiqh, the Qur'an and Sunnah, and contemporary fatwas from Darul Uloom Deoband, the International Islamic Fiqh Academy (OIC), and MUIS Singapore.
Their ruling: Halāl bi-shurūṭ — conditionally permissible. Only if five specific conditions are met.
