"All Good Gifts" is based on James 1:17, which tells us that, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father." God gives us so many gifts to enjoy every day, such as family, friends, sunshine, hugs, smiles, and kind words. Jesus Christ, our Savior, however, is God's ultimate "good and perfect gift."

Although many know this song from the 1970s musical, "Godspell," it was actually based upon a 1782 German poem by Matthias Claudius, which goes on to remind us of Matthew 6:19-21:

“Don’t store treasures for yourselves here on earth where moths and rust will destroy them and thieves can break in and steal them. But store your treasures in heaven where they cannot be destroyed by moths or rust, and where thieves cannot break in and steal them. Your heart will be where your treasure is."

First United Methodist Church-Brookhaven, MS will be allowing each of us to share our gifts, as well as our treasure, when we celebrate A NIGHT TO GIFT, on Sunday, June 30th, beginning at 6 PM. This evening of song, celebration, and reflection will allow us to explore how we can give back to God a small token of what he has given each of us.

If you have not RSVP'd for this exciting and uplifting evening, please contact the church office at 601-833-3519, to get your name(s) added to the guest list. It will be a night you won't want to miss.

Through March this year, more than 35,148 pounds of food were gleaned and distributed in Mississippi -- creating 140,592 servings of fresh food that could be shared with those in need. That's just since January of this year!

The Society of St. Andrew operates a volunteer-driven Gleaning Network which relies upon farmers, donors, and volunteers who partner together to gather fresh produce every year and use it to feed the hungry. It's a wonderful community service opportunity for anyone wishing to "do all the good" in their community.

On Wednesday, June 12th, at 6PM, First United Methodist Church-Brookhaven, MS will offer an informational session for those interested in volunteering to glean in their area. It will be held in the FUMC Ministry Center at 212 South Jackson Street.
Anyone interested in joining this grassroots effort to follow the teachings in Matthew 25:35, where Jesus says, "I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink... “Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink?...’ Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’"

If you'd like to learn more about the Society of St. Andrew and its mission to glean America's fields to feed America's hungry, please go to: https://endhunger.org/mississippi/ and watch a video with Langston Moore (Regional Director) and Marshall Ramsey.

In John 15:13, the Bible says, "Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends."

This Memorial Day weekend, as we recall those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation, let us pause and reflect on the blessings we enjoy in this country. One of those is to pray as we see fit.

This Sunday, May 26th, First United Methodist Church-Brookhaven, MS will enjoy a traditional barbecue dinner, but will also take time at the end of the evening to hold a vespers service to remember those who died for us -- not just soldiers, but also Jesus Christ.

All are welcome to join us at the the home of Sally Doty and Pat Nelson for a cookout, followed by vespers. The cookout begins at 6 PM, and the burgers and drinks will be provided. We are requesting that those who wish to attend bring a side dish or dessert to share.
