“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
Galatians 5:22-23 NIV
Notice he says fruit, singular, not “fruits.” These qualities belong together. As the Holy Spirit works in us, He produces a different kind of person.
Love — choosing what is best for others, even when it costs you.
Joy — a deeper gladness that isn’t dependent on circumstances.
Peace — steadiness and trust in God even when life is chaotic.
Forbearance — patience with people, especially difficult people.
Kindness — treating others with grace and compassion.
Goodness — choosing what is right, not merely what is convenient.
Faithfulness — being dependable, loyal, and true to God and your word.
Gentleness — strength under control. It isn’t weakness.
Self-control — having desires, emotions, appetites, and reactions without allowing them to control you.
And that last sentence matters:
“Against such things there is no law.”
In other words, you don’t need a rule telling someone not to love too much, have too much patience, be too faithful, or exercise too much self-control. A Spirit-led life fulfills the heart of what God desires.
There’s also an important contrast in the chapter. Just before this, Paul lists the works of the flesh, things that naturally come out when our sinful desires are running the show. Then comes that huge word:
“But…”
The flesh produces one kind of life.
But the Spirit produces another.
That makes this passage a good personal check:
Am I becoming more loving? More peaceful? More patient? More gentle? More self-controlled?
Not, “Am I perfect?” But, “Is there fruit growing?”
A simple prayer:
Holy Spirit, produce in me today what I cannot manufacture on my own. Let people see Your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control through the way I live. Amen.
