Of Men or Of God

An obedient faith has been required of faithful men and women throughout history. Hebrews 11

Ephesians 4:5-6
“One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”

Matthew 16:18 “I will build MY church (kingdom).” Christ built one.

The church is the “called out” belonging to Him/Christ- church of Christ.

“Called out” requires our obedient faith, just as our examples in Hebrews 11.

Our obedience to Christ’s will brings us toward/unto salvation, but CHRIST himself adds the faithful to His one church/body/kingdom in full immersion baptism.

Romans 6:4
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

CHRIST cleanses our sins in baptism. HE places us INTO HIS kingdom/body/church.

Galatians 3:27 “For as many of you as were baptized INTO Christ have put on Christ.”

Our obedience is man’s requirement. Administering salvation to an obedient, repentant, circumcised heart is Christ’s part. SALVATION IS A WORKING OF CHRIST, NOT a work of man.

2 Peter 3:9
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

WHEN THE KINGDOM CAME

Some are looking for Jesus to establish an earthly kingdom when He comes again. The Bible teaches that the kingdom has already been established. Jesus denied that the nature of His kingdom was earthly or political. He said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here." (John 18:36). The spiritual kingdom prophesied by the Old Testament prophets was established in the first century. Paul said that both he and the Colossian Christians had already been “translated into the Kingdom of God’s dear Son” (Col. 1:13). John said that he was in the kingdom when he wrote the book of Revelation (Rev. 1:9). When Jesus began His earthly ministry the Bible tells us, “Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." (Mark 1:14-15). “at hand” clearly indicates a time of nearness. How near was the kingdom to being established when Jesus uttered these words? Later, in Mark 9:1 Jesus said, "…Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power." Read this passage again very carefully. Jesus indicated that some of the very people who were standing with Him and heard Him speak would still be alive when the kingdom came with power. Did Jesus get it wrong? Are people from the first century still living? No. Jesus was right. Note that the kingdom would come when the power came. What power? After His resurrection from the dead and shortly before His ascension into heaven, the apostles asked Jesus, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” Jesus answered, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” This “power” of the Holy Spirit promised by Jesus came upon them on the very next Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). Jesus said the kingdom would come when the power came, and the power came on that Pentecost Day, thus that is when the spiritual kingdom of God was established. The kingdom and the church are the same divine institution. Those added by the Lord to His church are citizens in the kingdom of God (Acts 2:47; Eph. 2:19- 22; 1 Tim. 3:15). When Jesus comes again he will not establish an earthly kingdom. Rather, He will deliver His spiritual kingdom to God the Father to exist eternally with Him in heaven. (1 Corinthians 15:24; Col. 1:12; 1 Pet. 1:4)

Interesting facts . . .

Although, in 1912, churches of Christ adopted the denominational example of communion using individual cups, many congregations worldwide continue using one loaf and one vessel of unfermented grape juice (wine) to observe the Lord's Supper. The following article gives a brief history of the change.

Communion Cups in American Churches - A Brief History
by Dana Tan

Which Church Used Individual Communion Cups First?
According to historical records based on newspaper publications of the day, Communion cups were introduced by the Scovill Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church of Cleveland, Ohio in 1892. Alfred Van Derwerken—a lawyer in Brooklyn, New York—wrote a paper called “The Sacramental Cup” which he distributed to his pastor colleagues. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle ran his paper, which encouraged his fellow pastors to use “as many small cups as there are communicants…. for each person to drink from a cup no one else had used” (December 1, 1892, p. 10).

Van Derwerken endured a lot of criticism for his suggestions. In response to outcries that he was flying in the face of established religious practices and tradition, he defended himself by writing a response in the same newspaper saying, “This opinion of mine regarding the use of many cups at a Communion service…. is in operation in the West.” To prove his point he presented a letter he had received from Rev. H. Webb, pastor of Scovill Avenue Methodist Church of Cleveland, Ohio. Webb wrote that his church was “absolutely the first time or case where it [an individual cup] has been thus served” on December 6, 1891(December 2, 1892, p. 2)

In December 1891, both The Brooklyn Daily Eagle and the Utica Morning Herald stated that the Scovill Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church of Cleveland was the first to use individual Communion Cups on December 6, 1891.

What Kind of Cup was Used for Communion Before the Individual Cup?
Up until the 1890’s, Protestant churches used one common Communion cup or chalice that was shared among all participants. Some used just one, while larger churches were known to use several set up in stations at different places throughout the church in order to administer the Sacraments in a more timely manner. This meant even churches using multiple chalices still had tens or maybe hundreds of people sipping from the same cup during a Communion. In a time when outbreaks of diphtheria and tuberculosis were common, health-conscious Americans began attempts to consider alternatives to one common cup.

Several alternatives such as intinction, which is the practice of dipping the Communion host into the cup prior to partaking, were used, together with the addition of disinfectant cloths. Individual Communion cups emerged as the most popular method. Enough pastors and churches became convinced of the health benefits to using individual cups that the idea took hold, and rapidly spread across the country.

This one simple reform changed a long-standing 1,900-year-old practice, so it’s understandable that it met with some resistance. Now, some 130 years later it seems like individual Communion cups have been around for hundreds of years.

*Rev. J.G. Thomas, a denominational minister and physician, invented a tray to hold brass cups and a filler. G.C. Brewer is recorded as being the first to introduced individual cups into the Central Church of Christ, Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1912. Almost 20 years after individual cups were introduced into denominational churches, churches of Christ followed.

*Journal of Environmental Health (Holy Communion, July/August 1997), "no risk of infection from the common communion cup."

*Journal of Infectious Disease, William and Burrows- "0.0001% transferred even under the most favorable conditions;"
