Came across this last night in one of my Study Bibles while reading.

James 1:21 NKJV
….receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

When you dig into the original language here, you get a clearer picture of what is being said. That word “implanted” is farming language. It’s the same idea as what Jesus said - “the word is a seed.” And the word that is already in you grows. How does it grow? Verse 22 tells us - “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” Putting the Word to work in our lives is what makes it produce results. The intention of the Word living in you is to produce results.

But the tail end of verse 21 confuses people sometimes - “able to save your souls.” This isn’t talking about saving as far as salvation. But it does use the same Greek word ‘sozo.’ And soul isn’t just talking about your soul (mind, will, and emotions). It’s referencing your entire life. A faithful way of saying it is that it will continually transform your ongoing life. James is talking about something specific in context (character, obedience, maturity, etc), but in light of the rest of scripture we can see that this transformation applies to every area of our lives: forgiveness, peace, health, preservation, provision, deliverance from danger, restoration, being made whole, and on and on

So the Word that is in you, when acted upon, will produce an ongoing transformation in your lived life. Stay blessed.
