This story moves me every time I think of it!

An inmate came into my office and said, โ€œChaplain, I was praying about my kids and I felt that God would have me to ask you to pray and agree with me that I will find where my children are and will be allowed some limited contact with them through their adoptive parents. I asked what she knew did know about the situation. She stated that not only was it a closed adoption, and she thought that her children were living out of state in one of the five states surrounding Oklahoma. Outside of that, she knew nothing.

I told her I would agree with her, but that really, God was going to have to do some thing to find these people, since she had virtually no knowledge of where to start. I really had to stretch my faith to agree with her, but I told her I would. So we prayed.

I didnโ€™t hear from her for about three months. Then she she came bursting into my office with tears streaming down her cheeks and a smile on her face. โ€œGuess what?โ€, she said, โ€œI received a letter from the people who had adopted all three of my kids. They said they had been trying to find me for a few months. They told me they really love my kids, but that since they are moving into their teens, they started mentioning me and they had prayed about how to handle this situation!โ€

She later went on to say, โ€œI just love Jesus!โ€ Let this be an encouragement to you that God can work in impossible situations. He is good.

Parenting from prison. A subject we need to hear more about.

Parenting from prison. A subject we need to hear more about.

What is it like parenting from prison?

As a Chaplain, I wore many hats. I taught classes and loved every bit of it. I taught a "Parenting From Prison" class where I helped mothers strengthen their relationship with their children.

Something that I always emphasized to the women is that their children do love them, but they don't trust them because of the choices that they have made. It is now their responsibility to gain back their children's trust.

Getting to help those mothers mend relationships with their children truly filled my cup. These women do want to turn their lives around and get their children back. However, the work starts in prison.

Kathey McCollum new book is out!! Sent to Prison: A Chaplain's Story. On Amazon!

I remember very vividly the day I was called to be a chaplain. I knew that I felt called to be in ministry, but I had no direction.

When I felt God calling me to go to a prison, tears came to my eyes. I felt so grateful to feel this calling and shocked to know that this is where I was supposed to go.

Even in the confusion, God led me through this incredible journey. After all these years, I have decided to tell this story of redemption. If my story is moving you, the stories I tell of the women I met at Eddie Warrior Correctional Center will truly encourage you. Please copy and paste this post onto your news feed.
