One evening last week I was exhausted after a busy day. Just before I turned out my light for the night, I remembered something I'd forgotten to do that afternoon.
I'm at that age (yay!) where I need to write reminder notes to myself, or I forget to do things.
But I was tired.
And I didn't feel like taking the time to write a note.
So instead, I moved my pencil case from the right side of my bookshelf to the left. (Yes, I'm THAT person. I always put things back in exactly the same place. Annoying, I know.) 😉
Anyway....the next morning, I immediately spotted my "out-of-place" pencil case and thought,
"Why did I put that there????" 😂
We are a forgetful people, aren't we? Even when we have the best of intentions, we often forget things that we should remember.
Nowhere is this more true than our spiritual lives. Many times after an amazing answer to prayer or a great spiritual victory, we declare, "I will NEVER forget what God did for me!"
But just a few short months (or weeks, or days) later, we wring our hands in despair over a pressing trial, sure that God won't come through for us.
We forgot.
What is the answer this this dilemma?
If we look through the pages of Scripture, we find the answer:
Create visual reminders of what God has done in our lives.
In the Bible, God commanded His people to use various reminders—fringes on their garments, feasts and celebrations, scripture on doorposts, and monuments constructed of rocks. The Israelites were to keep God's words, His promises, and His commands before them at all times.
In our modern society, we have many ways to capture memories. We can type notes into our phone, take a photo of a special blessing (like I did with my daisies a few devotionals ago!), or even record on video or audio the things that God has done in our lives.
My favorite way to recall God's blessings is using good, old-fashioned pen and paper. I love reading through my devotional and prayer journals and remembering how God has worked in my life.
Whatever method you choose, determine to be intentional to remind yourself of the goodness of God.
"And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)
