Remembering Wendell Berry who died this week. Berry was an elected member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers, a recipient of the National Humanities Medal and the Jefferson Lecturer for 2012. He was also a 2013 Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and, from 2014 to his death, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Berry was named the recipient of the 2013 Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award. On January 28, 2015, he became the first living writer to be inducted into the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame.

Louise Mundinger to Present “Transformations” Organ Recital
The Mehaffey Artist Series will welcome distinguished organist Louise Mundinger for an afternoon recital, Transformations, on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 900 Main Street, Brockton, Massachusetts. Admission is free; donations will be gratefully accepted.

Mundinger, Music Director at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, is widely respected as a performer, teacher, composer, and advocate for organ music. A past dean of the Boston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, she also directed the AGO’s National New Music Committee for six years. Her work is rooted in bringing pipe-organ music to new audiences and inviting listeners to hear the stories that music can tell.

The program explores transformation through joyful hymn settings, historic masterworks, and contemporary music. Selections include Brenda Portman’s “Again I Say, Rejoice”; settings of “Soul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness” by Charles Ore, Max Reger, and Johann Sebastian Bach; Jessica French’s Transformations for Organ on Pange lingua; Dietrich Buxtehude’s Prelude in G Minor, BuxWV 149; and Reger’s “Dankpsalm” on Lobe den Herren. Congregational hymn connections drawn from Evangelical Lutheran Worship will enrich the program’s musical and spiritual threads.

Mundinger’s career includes study in Freiburg, Germany, with Zsigmond Szathmáry through the Frank Huntington Beebe Award for Musicians. She was a prize winner in the San Anselmo Organ Improvisation Competition and received the Talbot Baker Teaching Award from Milton Academy in 2008. Her compositions have been commissioned by organizations including the American Guild of Organists, the American Composers Forum, and the Diocese of Massachusetts.

All are invited to experience this engaging afternoon of organ music—music that looks both backward and forward, transforming familiar hymns and traditions into fresh, expressive sound.
