Saint Barnabas is known as the "son of encouragement" because he constantly uplifted those around him. He played a key role in spreading the Gospel by supporting new believers and inspiring them to remain faithful. His words and actions helped many find hope and strength during difficult times.

In a time when the early Church faced divisions, Saint Barnabas worked diligently to bring people together. He collaborated closely with other great apostles, including Saint Paul, to resolve conflicts and build a strong, united community. His efforts laid the groundwork for a Church based on mutual respect and shared faith.

Jesus goes out of His way to promote the authority of the Law of God. He did not come to abolish the Law, regardless of what the Pharisees accused Him of. In fact, Jesus continues His statement with a commendation for those who teach the Law accurately and hold it in reverence: “Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:19).

Note the qualities that Jesus attributes to the Word of God, referenced as “the Law and the Prophets”: 1) The Word is everlasting; it will outlast the natural world. 2) The Word was written with intent; it was meant to be fulfilled. 3) The Word possesses plenary authority; even the smallest letter of it is established. 4) The Word is faithful and trustworthy; “everything” it says will be accomplished. No one hearing Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount could doubt His commitment to the Scriptures.

The Prayer of Saint Ephrem the Syrian, Deacon - Harp of the Holy Spirit:

O Lord and Master of my life,
take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk.

But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant.

Yea, O Lord and King,
grant me to see my own sins
and not to judge my brother;
for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages.

Amen.

Today we hear a portion of the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew's Gospel, containing the Beatitudes. Jesus opens the sermon with nine declarations that turn the world's values on their head. In a culture that prized strength, wealth, and status, Jesus pronounces blessing on the poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek, and the persecuted. These are not instructions to become miserable — they are descriptions of the kind of people who are positioned to receive God's kingdom.

Today we celebrate one of the most holy mysteries in the Church. We hear Jesus say, “This is my body”, and we believe him. We truly believe that he is present in the Eucharist – body, blood, soul, and divinity.

In the 12th century in the French region of Premontre, Saint Norbert founded a religious Order known as the Praemonstratensians or the Norbertines. His founding of the Order was a monumental tasks: combating rampant heresies—particularly regarding the Blessed Sacrament, revitalizing many of the faithful who had grown indifferent and dissolute, plus effecting peace and reconciliation among enemies.

Saint Norbert entertained no pretensions about his own ability to accomplish this multiple task. Even with the aid of a goodly number of men who joined his Order, he realized that nothing could be effectively done without God’s power. Finding this help especially in devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, he and his Norbertines praised God for success in converting heretics, reconciling numerous enemies, and rebuilding faith in indifferent believers. Many of them lived in central houses during the week and served in parishes on weekends.

Reluctantly, Saint Norbert became archbishop of Magdeburg in central Germany, a territory half pagan and half Christian. In this position he zealously and courageously continued his work for the Church until his death on June 6, 1134.

Saint Boniface bears out the Christian rule: To follow Christ is to follow the way of the cross. For Boniface, it was not only physical suffering or death, but the painful, thankless, bewildering task of Church reform. Missionary glory is often thought of in terms of bringing new persons to Christ. It seems—but is not—less glorious to heal the household of the faith.

A scribe has asked Jesus what the "most important" or foundational commandment is. The Mosaic law has 613 commands, and the scribes added many others in the Oral Law. While all the written laws are to be obeyed, they each have a certain priority in the minds of the religious leaders. Jesus' response is: know God, love God, love others. These commandments cover all of God's requirements.

In this verse and Mark 12:30, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:4–5 which is the beginning of the Shema prayer. Shema is from the Hebrew word for "hear," which is the first word of the saying. Devout Jews pray the Shema in the morning and night as a way of fulfilling Deuteronomy 6:7: "…talk of [the laws]…when you lie down, and when you rise."

After quoting that we are to love God, Jesus continues that we are to love others. But it's interesting to note that the "greatest commandment" doesn't start with loving God and others, but with "hear." The first principle we need to obey is to hear and understand and accept that the Lord is our God and the Lord is one. The rest of the Mosaic law—in fact, all of Scripture—means nothing without the understanding of who God is.

Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions’ Story

One of 22 Ugandan martyrs, Saint Charles Lwanga is the patron of youth and Catholic action in most of tropical Africa. He protected his fellow pages, aged 13 to 30, from the sexual demands of the Bagandan ruler, Mwanga, and encouraged and instructed them in the Catholic faith during their imprisonment for refusing the ruler’s demands.

Saint Charles Lwanga first learned of Christ’s teachings from two retainers in the court of Chief Mawulugungu. While a catechumen, he entered the royal household as assistant to Joseph Mukaso, head of the court pages.

On the night of Mukaso’s martyrdom for encouraging the African youths to resist Mwanga, Saint Charles Lwanga requested and received baptism. Imprisoned with his friends, Charles’ courage and belief in God inspired them to remain chaste and faithful.

For his own unwillingness to submit to the immoral acts and his efforts to safeguard the faith of his friends, Charles was burned to death at Namugongo on June 3, 1886, by Mwanga’s order.
