What happened the day AFTER Aldersgate?

Thursday, 25.—The moment I awakened, “Jesus, Master,” was in my heart and in my mouth; and I found all my strength lay in keeping my eye fixed upon Him and my soul waiting on Him continually. Being again at St. Paul’s in the afternoon, I could taste the good word of God in the anthem which began, “My song shall be always of the loving-kindness of the Lord: with my mouth will I ever be showing forth thy truth from one generation to another.” Yet the enemy injected a fear, “If thou dost believe, why is there not a more sensible change? I answered (yet not I), “That I know not. But, this I know, I have ‘now peace with God.’ And I sin not today, and Jesus my Master has forbidden me to take thought for the morrow.” ~ John Wesley (journal entry May 25, 1738 -- the day after Aldersgate)

How is it that I never noticed that wonderful sentence about tasting the good word of God in the anthem he heard at St. Paul's ?

Aldersgate Day, celebrated on May 24 (or the Sunday closest), commemorates the day in 1738 when John Wesley experienced assurance of his salvation, or, as like to say, John Wesley felt his "heart strangely warmed."

The story goes that Wesley reluctantly attended a group meeting that evening on Aldersgate Street in London. Wesley wrote in his journal that at about 8:45 p.m. he was listening to a reading from Luther's Preface to the Epistle to the Romans.

"While he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death."

As we celebrate Aldersgate Day -- and Pentecost -- we remember the power of the Holy Spirit that ignited a movement called Methodism -- and continues to ignite us into faithful and loving actions today!

Our summer camp theme is "Love, Serve, Lead (And Beyond)" based on the new vision statement of the United Methodist Church. As campers are learning about joyfully serving others, they will get to put together hygiene kits for Midwest Mission. Consider assisting us in collecting these items to create a bigger impact in our communities.

Arts Camp is a wonderful summer experience for 4th–6th graders who love to create, explore, and have fun! Campers will work on exciting art projects that leave a lasting legacy at camp, and they will make special creations to take home, too.

Along with all the creativity, campers will still enjoy traditional camp activities like swimming, archery, games, Bible Study, hiking, and making new friends.
