The gospel message is one of the motivating factors for change in the life of the Christian. The Holy Spirit effects change in our hearts because we believe what God says- both about sin and about ourselves. This is what makes authentic Christianity a far cry from mere moralism. But change is never easy. When God calls us to change it is because our sinful nature is genuinely corrupt. In fact, the Bible teaches us that no part of man has escaped the corruption of the fall. Tragically, this means that our sinful nature has many means by which it expresses itself- many which we often overlook. As we continue our series on the new life from Colossians chapter 3, Paul begins to confront us about expressions of our sinful nature. Tomorrow we will be looking at the issue of sexual immorality. Challenging words, for sure, but desperately needed for Christians living in today’s society. We invite you to join us as we study God’s word and worship Him. Also, tomorrow after our morning worship service we will be holding a fellowship potluck meal in our fellowship hall! We would love it if you would join us! If you would like to contribute food, you’re welcome- just bring something to share. But please don’t feel like bringing something is a requirement- please be our honored guest! We will not be holding our normal evening service due to having the potluck. Hope we get to see you soon!

How often have you seen Christianity reduced to a set of moral rules? Be honest - how often have you lived like your faith was a set of rules even though you probably know better? Truth is we all sometimes forget that a relationship with Jesus Christ comes with life changing power, and when we forget the power for living, we sometimes exchange faith for moralism. Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at Colossians 3, where Paul teaches what it means to have new life in Christ. We invite you to come worship together with us as we celebrate Jesus and study his word together. Our morning worship service begins at 10:50 am, and we also offer Sunday school (both for adults and for children) starting at 9:45. Tomorrow, we will not be holding evening church, as it is a holiday weekend, but next week, we will resume evening church at 6pm. Hope we get the honor of seeing you soon!

There are any number of reasons that we, as human beings, even specifically as Christians, may doubt that “God loves us and has a wonderful plan” for our lives. In our minds we can paint these images of God as capricious and quick tempered (mostly because we ourselves can be capricious and quick tempered). Or we tell ourselves things like “well, I’ve blown it now- God is going to punish me for that”. Deep in our heart of hearts, we sometimes find it difficult to believe that God deals with his children gently and graciously. When the truth of the matter is that God has had a plan to treat us with a favor and love that would redeem us from our sin, and restore in us our rightful place in his family. This plan was put into effect even from the foundation of the world, and God has promised us throughout recorded scripture that he will fulfill his plan. And indeed, he has never deviated from it. What God plans, he will surely do. In tomorrow’s scripture passage, we learn that God reminds us of his gracious plan, in part, because he desires that we hold fast to hope and persevere. We invite you to come join us for worship. Our morning service begins at 10:50. We would be so delighted to have you! Hope we get to see you soon!

Do you ever feel like you’re at the end of your strength and resources, and you find yourself looking for hope? Feeling overwhelmed is a common experience on this side of glory. The good news is that God offers us hope. Tomorrow we will be looking together at part of Isaiah 40, where God calls us to hope and trust in him; He promises to renew our strength if we do. We invite you to come join us as we take comfort in God’s word and learn from him. Our morning worship begins at 9:45 with Sunday School, and then our morning service begins at 10:50. Tomorrow, being Mothers’ Day, we will not be having our normal evening worship service. We would be so excited to have you with us tomorrow morning! Hope we get to see you soon!

The third century Christian author and apologist Tertullian once said “Hope is patience with the lamp lit.” True hope, Christian hope, helps us to see the truth that is bigger than ourselves- the truth of God’s grace and eternal life. More than any other message in history, the Gospel brings us hope. In tomorrow’s scripture passage, Colossians 1, Paul tells us that the hope of the gospel builds both our faith, and also our love for the saints. Maybe you could use some hope just now- we’d love for you to come join us as we worship God and hear his Word. Sunday school begins at 9:45, and our morning worship service begins at 10:50. We also offer a Sunday evening service that begins at 6pm. If you join us, it is among our hopes for you that you will feel welcomed and treated like family. And it is our promise to you that you will hear the Word of God.

Christian, do you ever have trouble setting aside anxieties? I think we all do sometimes. Certainly the writers of Scripture did. In fact, it was likely in the context of facing anxiety that King David wrote the Psalm we’ll be looking at tomorrow- Psalm 131. In it, David gives us good guidance about finding hope in the midst of our struggles. We invite you to join us tomorrow as we worship Christ and study his word together. We would be so honored to have you! Morning worship begins at 10:50 am, and we also offer Sunday School immediately beforehand at 9:45. Evening worship starts at 6pm. We really do hope that if you come, you will be drawn in to worship, and that you will also feel treated like family. Hope we get to see you soon!

One of the realities about the resurrection of Jesus Christ that his disciples didn’t expect, and that you and I often forget, is that Jesus is not constrained by the limits of a mortal body. Locked doors do not keep him out, nor do our anxieties and fears. A risen savior, he is now present with us always by his Holy Spirit. Perhaps as you consider how often you sin with little regard (as I also do), you recoil at the thought that Jesus was present for that. But the fact that Jesus still willingly bears the nailprints demonstrates for us how he chooses to be known to us: the savior who died to redeem us. In this Sunday’s passage, John 20:19-31, Jesus suddenly appears to his disciples, though they are hiding in a locked room. But he doesn’t come to bring shame on them for their fear, cowardice, or even betrayal- instead he comes to bring them grace in believing him. By his Spirit Jesus often comes to us bearing this same grace. Maybe just now, you feel need of the Lord’s peace and grace; we invite you to come worship with us this Sunday and hear His Word together. His Word always accomplishes His will. We would be so delighted to have you join us! Every Sunday, Sunday School begins at 9:45; right now our adult class is studying the Lord’s work of revitalization in His church. We also offer Sunday School for children of all ages. Our morning worship begins at 10:50. This Sunday we will not be having our regular Sunday evening service on account of the races at Bristol Motor Speedway and the anticipated traffic congestion- but we will resume our Sunday evening service next Sunday at 6pm. We sure do hope that we get the pleasure of seeing you soon!
