Christian, do you ever wrestle with bitterness or a jaded attitude? I believe we all get cynical from time to time. I think also, that we all recognize that this attitude isn’t what we should have on display. The question is: How can I move from an attitude of complaining or bitterness? This Sunday, we’ll be looking at Paul’s answer to this question: we can move to a good attitude by cultivating grateful hearts. As Christians, real gratitude on a regular basis usually begins with the Word of God. The more often we preach the gospel to ourselves, the more obvious God’s grace becomes. And we mature in our gratitude, as we begin to let the gratitude of Christ affect our words and our actions. Maybe you could use some encouragement, friend- we invite you to come worship with us and hear God’s word. Our morning service begins at 10:50, and we also offer Sunday School for all ages at 9:45. We would be delighted to see you! Also this Sunday we’re holding a fellowship lunch immediately after our morning service! Won’t you be our guest? You don’t have to bring anything, but if you’d like to, feel free to bring something to share! And invite a friend! Good morning! Looking for a great place to go to church? Come join us! This morning, we are studying the topic of ‘Christian Peace’ from Romans 12. We would absolutely love to have you! You are welcome to come as you are, or to dress up- we’re not here to evaluate your outfit! :) Morning worship begins at 10:50, and we also offer Sunday School for adults and children alike at 9:45. Paul compares living the new Christian life to getting dressed. And interestingly, he reminds us that "above all these things", we are to "put on" love. This is important for us to remember, because most of us prefer to think of ourselves as generally 'loving', when the truth is that unless we are being deliberate, our focus is often much more on ourselves than it is on putting others first. Maybe you're struggling to love others as well as you want or should- take comfort; the Word offers us encouragment and strength. We invite you to come worship with us and hear God's word together. Few struggles demonstrate the difficulty of being made new quite as dramatically as the struggle over forgiveness. On the one hand, most people recognize the beauty of forgiveness, and we will applaud stories of ‘letting go of hurt’. But on the other side, we’d be lying if we said that we also enjoy the idea of revenge. We may not overtly say that we do, and we may even deceive ourselves into thinking we don’t. But our culture says differently. Consider how many popular movies and tv shows over the past decades have glamorized revenge. Even just a cursory glimpse would reveal a lengthy list. Consider how many entertainment videos on youtube, facebook, etc… contain the word ‘Karma’. We live in a culture over-saturated with the notion of revenge both big and small. And a truly honest look at our own hearts certainly reveals that we ourselves do hold grudges and do find it difficult to forgive. But Paul points out to us something that Jesus himself clearly taught: our offenses against God are far weightier and more numerous than others’ offenses against us; since God has forgiven us a much greater debt, we also MUST forgive. Tomorrow we will be looking at this teaching in God’s word. If you wrestle with the issue of forgiveness, perhaps you want to hear this message. We invite you to join us as we worship Christ and study his word together. We would be more than honored to have you! I have often heard people say “Don’t pray for patience, because God will bring you trouble to teach it.” I like to think God is not spiteful and capricious, and I hope that you’re honest enough to recognize that you ALREADY need patience without God needing to send heavy trial to teach it to you. Patience is not a ‘special occasion’ character trait - rather it is something we need to foster during ‘ordinary’ occasions. We’re often blind to the impatience we routinely show during the every day type of troubles: an unexpected wait at the supermarket; a person in our life who routinely annoys us; a co-worker whose attitude is off-putting; a driver who cuts us off. In such occasions we seldom deliberately show patience. Then, when troubles come which we perceive as “big”, we find ourselves woefully unable to have patience or peace. As part of the new life we are called to foster in ourselves as Christians, Paul says we should ‘put on’ patience. Tomorrow, we will be looking at the book of James, where the Lord’s brother points out to us a reason for developing patience: the return of Christ. If you’re struggling with patience right now, maybe this is a message you need to hear. We invite you to come worship with us as we praise the Lord, listen to His word, and enjoy the fellowship of believers. We would be so honored to have you! When you hear the phrase ‘gentle Jesus, meek and mild,’ how do you respond to that? Personally, I’ve encountered the phrase more often on the lips of people who would debate the issue: ‘Mild?!! He’s king of kings and Lord of Lords! He flipped tables in the temple! He called the Pharisees ‘whitewashed tombs’ and ‘brood of vipers’! He’s going to return riding on the clouds, and every knee will bow before him!’ I don’t debate any of those points. However, we do need to be careful about the conclusions we reach. Jesus is literally God incarnate, and so he has the authority and the right to confront sin however he will. We do not. Also, particularly in his earthly ministry Jesus showed extraordinary meekness. Don’t be confused here- meekness is not a synonym for ‘weakness’. Quite the opposite: meekness is that quality of having power, and yet restraining the use of that power for a good purpose. In tomorrow’s passage, as we continue examining the character qualities of our new life in Christ, we are going to see that Jesus, in inviting us to himself, describes himself as ‘meek.’ And it is this merciful meekness of Christ that you and I are called to emulate. We invite you to join us as we worship Christ and study his Word. We’d be so excited to have you! The book of Proverbs tells us “When pride comes, then comes disgrace…” (Proverbs 11:2a). It probably doesn't take a lot of effort to think of concrete examples you've seen of this principle at work. Unfortunately, however, pride is insidious in that it is extremely easy to recognize in others, and much more difficult to identify in ourselves. If we look at our hearts honestly, though, pride resides behind many, dare I say most, of our personal struggles with God and with other people. Tomorrow, as we look at how we are to put on the nature of Christ, we will be looking at the solution to our pride problem- humility. We invite you to change join us as we worship Christ together and study his Word. We offer Sunday School for all ages starting at 9:45, and then our morning worship service begins at 10:50.
