Join us in being careful stewards of God's Creation Welcome to Earth Ministry at St. Mary’s Bristol, RI!

Earth Ministry is centered around Pope Francis’ papal letter, “Care for our Common Home” (“Laudato Si”). Pope Francis’ message is simply that we are called to be careful stewards of God’s creation and to ensure a safe and hospitable environment for all human beings, now and for generations to come. Our local mission: We strive to foster a deeper awareness of environmental stewardship within our p

arish, our community and our extended family by encouraging good stewardship practices at home, work, our parish and in our community via a three-prong approach of 1) Spirituality 2) Education 3) Action. We offer simple tips for simple changes in our everyday lives as well as events that will bring us together so we can see and appreciate the beauty of the world we live in.

We’ve been getting a lot of calls lately about wildlife showing up in yards, under sheds, and around homes, so we wanted to share a few helpful reminders and tips.
In Rhode Island, healthy wildlife cannot legally be relocated because they are present on your property. Most animals are simply passing through or looking for food, water, and shelter.

Here are a few ways to help prevent unwanted wildlife visits:
• Secure trash cans and pet food
• Close off access under decks and sheds
• Remove outdoor food sources when possible
• Keep bird feeders clean and away from the house
• Give wildlife space and never approach or feed them
Seeing wildlife is often a sign of a healthy environment, and learning to coexist safely benefits both people and animals. 🦊🦝🦌🌿

We are excited to share that Audubon Society of Rhode Island has been awarded a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation as part of its Program for Animal Welfare!

This program supports organizations across Rhode Island by funding projects that improve animal care and promote education about the humane treatment of animals.

The funding we receive will help provide food and essential supplies for the animals in our animal ambassador program. Many of our animal ambassadors are former pets or permanently injured animals that can’t return to their native habitats. At RI Audubon, they help us connect nearly 30,000 children and adults each year with the natural world through programs at our facilities and in schools, libraries, and senior centers.

We’re so grateful to the Rhode Island Foundation and the donors who make this work possible! Learn more about this grant and the other recipients here: https://bit.ly/4r7mrn6

Spring is right around the corner, which means amphibians and reptiles are getting ready to emerge from brumation! Soon, species like wood frogs and spotted salamanders will be on the search for vernal pools to lay their eggs.

And we need your help to monitor these vernal pools! As a volunteer with our Vernal Pool Monitoring program, you'll spend a couple of hours a week at a vernal pool collecting data on egg masses and recording what amphibian and reptile species you find.

What are vernal pools and why are they important? Vernal pools are a unique wetland habitat that come and go with the seasons. They usually fill up with winter snow and rain and dry out in the late summer-early fall. This change makes sure that fish are not present in these pools when egg masses are laid by amphibian species. Vernal pools and their inhabitants play an important role—many bird and mammal species also depend on these habitats to survive.

Interested in getting involved? Virtual trainings will be held on Wednesday February 4th and 11th. For more information, email [email protected]!
