Today we observed Pentecost and an all souls “Saturday”.

Pentecost (also known as Trinity Day or the Descent of the Holy Spirit) is one of the Great Feasts of the Eastern Orthodox Church, celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles as described in Acts 2. It marks the birthday of the Church, the full revelation of the Holy Trinity, and the culmination of the Paschal cycle.
Orthodox Pentecost is always celebrated on a Sunday, exactly fifty days after Pascha (Easter). In 2026, Orthodox Pentecost falls on May 31, 2026.
Key traditions include:
Liturgical Center: The feast is preceded by Great Vespers and the Divine Liturgy, with the hymns "O Heavenly King" and "We have seen the True Light" sung for the first time since Easter.
Kneeling Vespers: On the evening of Pentecost, the faithful perform full prostrations (touching foreheads to the floor) for the first time since Easter, during prayers composed by St. Basil the Great.
Symbols: Churches are decorated with greenery and flowers to symbolize the renewing life of the Spirit. The Pentecost icon depicts the Apostles and the Theotokos seated in a semi-circle under tongues of fire, with an empty throne in the center representing Christ’s continued presence in the Church.
Following Feasts: The Monday after Pentecost is the Feast of the Holy Spirit, and the following Sunday is the Feast of All Saints.
